TWICE AS NICE:
Brad Vickers & His Vestapolitans
bring
their good-time blues, jump,
roots 'n' roll back to Florida!
“The blues is a big tent
community, from jazzy Bessie Smith to screaming Buddy Guy and everything in
between. On Twice As Nice, Brad Vickers’ sixth album, he brings the tent and
the whole three-ring circus. There’s something for everyone to enjoy, and much
more going on that the musicians’ proficiency makes it seem.”

Guitarist/songwriter BRAD VICKERS learned on the job playing, recording, and touring with America’s blues and roots masters: Pinetop Perkins, Jimmy Rogers, Hubert Sumlin, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Odetta, Sleepy LaBeef, and Rosco Gordon—to name only a few. Brad cut his teeth backing up these elder statesmen. He had the good fortune to play on Pinetop Perkins’ Grammy-nominated discs, “Born in the Delta” (Telarc), and “Ladies’ Man” (MC Records), and ‘Pinetop Perkins & Jimmy Rogers, Genuine Blues Legends’ (Elrob) was up for a 2017 Blues Music Award. Now his own group, The Vestapolitans, offers a good-time, crowd-pleasing mix of Blues and great American Roots 'n' Roll. Touring with their great, new fall 2019 CD, they will play at the 2020 Blues Bash at the Ranch Festival. Past performances include the 2016 Bucks County Blues Picnic, Pennsylvania Blues Festival, Easton, PA Garlic Festival, and headlining the 2017 Thouars, France Blues Festival. Their great CDs have met with terrific reviews (Downbeat gives them ****½ stars), “Best Of” lists, and great radio play. But most important, audiences love them!

"As always we celebrate the music that we love, and the styles that have influenced us: blues, folk, jump, and “great American roots ’n’ roll”. Along with new originals by both myself and Margey, we chose to cover a few long-time favorites, and start the album off with one of those, “Worried LifeBlues” by Big Maceo (by way of Chuck Berry). Right off the bat we were able to feature some of our special guests. “Mississippi Swamp” gets the humor going as I encounter a (possibly) talking bullfrog. Margey’s “Love Can Win” is a soulful, optimistic anthem for our times. On Jimmy Reed’s “Close Together” we have a chance to do a rendition of a song by the aguably ultimate bluesman. The rocking “Coast To Coast” is our take on the classic road trip theme. On “Twice As Nice” Margey pays homage to the early risqué female blues singers. “Red Dust” is my lament for the American Indian. Our “Everything I Need” gives yet another bow to Jimmy Reed with a Chicago-style shuffle. Next we cover Will Shade’s jugband classic, “Stealin’ Stealin’”. For me, blues founding-father Tampa Red is a must. Here we do his “Look A There Look A There”. Finally, Margey’s “Brooklyn Evenings” is an idyll to a bygone urban era. We hope you have half as much fun listening, as we had making “Twice As Nice”! " — Brad Vickers 2019
