Ethnomusicologist and acoustic blues standout Dr. David Evans is coming to Gainesville on July 18, courtesy of the North Central Florida Blues Society. David Evans has been performing country blues since 1962, having learned directly from many southern blues musicians of an older generation. Much of this learning was gained in the course of field research on the country blues tradition, beginning in 1965. Evans is currently Professor of Music at the University of Memphis. He is the author of numerous books, including: Tommy Johnson (1971), Big Road Blues: Tradition and Creativity in the Folk Blues (1982) and The NPR Curious Listener’s Guide to Blues (2005), and he has produced over 50 LPs and CDs of his field and studio recordings of blues, gospel and folk music. Evans’ first musical partner was the late Alan Wilson, who went on to become a member of the blues-rock group Canned Heat. Since 1980, Evans has toured in Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy and Switzerland as a guitar accompanist to Jessie Mae Hemphill, Hammie Nixon, Johnnie Shines, and Jack Owens, and has made over 40 solo tours across multiple continents. Join us for an intimate acoustic Blues experience unlike anything you've probably experienced!

For August 2, the North Central Florida Blues Society brings you another Quarterly Concert. The Jeff Jensen Band has youth and energy but also the chops and understanding usually only expected from older performers. Jensen is known for his collaborations with Brandon Santini and Victor Wainwright as well as for taking his audience on a journey, helping them forget about their real lives, troubles, and struggles and have a memorable night.
In Jensen's own words: "I am not trying to play West Coast blues, not trying to play Chicago or Delta style blues. It all circles around my attempt to create real energy and real emotional content."
“Jeff don’t chase any ghosts of Robert Johnson, or fall into the pitfalls of coming off gimmicky… He brings the goods with this no-nonsense production and I can’t help but conclude that his songs were constructed for the express purpose of taking on and winning over an audience… something I greatly admire and something he and his band have the extreme talent to do!” – Victor Wainwright (2013 BMA winner)
Anyone who has ever witnessed a Jeff Jensen live show is fully aware of how much energy the guitarist expends as flies across the stage, seemingly lost in a world that only he can navigate. The rock-solid support he gets from Bill Ruffino on bass and Robinson Bridgeforth on drums serves as his musical life-line tethering him to the world of reality that the rest of us live in. - Blues Blast Magazine
"Don't worry about this one. Just show up,
pay your money, and have one of the best
nights of live music you will have this year.
No kidding."
