Savoy-Doucet Cajun Band April 11 at the Colony Theatre, Miami Beach in Tigertail Performance Series

Cajun music in celebration of the
French spirit of joie de vivre.

The Savoy-Doucet Cajun Band continues a Cajun French tradition of Acadian music as genuine as can be found in the 21st century. Marc Savoy (accordion, vocals), wife Ann Savoy (guitar, frequent lead vocals), and Michael Doucet of BeauSoleil (fiddle, vocals) comprise the trio, which has been performing and recording together since 1977. They bring the raw energy of the dancehalls of southwest Louisiana to the stage, peppered with humorous and informative anecdotes about life on the Louisiana prairies.

The instrument Marc Savoy plays in the band is an Acadian accordion of his own manufacture. He has been making accordions since 1960, and builds them in his own shop – the Savoy Music Center, in Eunice, Louisiana.

Savoy-Doucet has recorded five CDs on the Arhoolie label. They have traveled all over the world, appearing in many prestigious venues, including the Newport Folk Festival, the Berlin Jazz Festival, the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes at the Smithsonian Institution, the National Geographic Concert Series and the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, England. The United States Department of State has taken them on numerous tours, featured them in national festivals, and awarded Marc Savoy the National Heritage Fellowship Award – the highest honor in the country for traditional artists. Michael Doucet was awarded a Grammy for his work with his other band, Beausoleil. Ann Savoy was awarded the Botkin Book Award for her definitive book on the history of Cajun music, and she recently appeared as a musician in the film Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood.

Although the Savoy Doucet Cajun Band insists upon maintaining a more acoustic approach to Cajun music the band can hold its own amongst Cajun music lovers everywhere. In fact, the band loves seeing how much power and sound they can get out of just three instruments.

Each member of the band can play numerous instruments and they sometimes trade instruments during stage performances. Early French ballads are added to the program to show other historic elements prevalent in early southwest Louisiana. Between the songs, the Cajun French poetry of the songs is often briefly translated by Ann so that the feeling can be better understood. Their repertoire is chosen carefully – popular dancehall tunes interspersed with soulful ballads, fiddle or vocal duets, or blues. The songs show the spectrum of Cajun life from sorrow and lost love to nonsense and the joy of dance.

It should be noted that the correct pronunciation of Savoy-Doucet is that of the French, i.e.: Savoy: Sah-Vwah; Doucet: Doo-Say. In both cases, the accent is on the 2nd of the two syllables.

During the full month of April, FLA-FRA (Florida-France), a Tigertail project in its second year, celebrates art from France, Florida and the Francophone world. FLA-FRA, a community-wide fĂŞte of dynamic, robust concerts, films, pop-up performances and other events happens throughout Miami at theaters and unexpected locations. Dispersed throughout the month are daily sunrise meditations, Django Gypsy music, Miami artist-created five-minute Culture Clicks, French Cajun music, Cocteau films, contemporary African dance from the Ivory Coast, chasse au trĂ©sor (a treasure hunt) – quixotic, fun, events reflective of Miami and the French spirit of joie de vivre. Biscuit Fest Day 4...(Allen Kanovsky Gets All Funky, All Weekend Long at Mess O' Blues and Funky Biscuit)

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 03/30/15

...provided the closing to an incredible weekend of listening to the BLUES played by some of the best musicians in the world. Saturday afternoon Mess O' BLUES in Pompano Beach, Saturday night at Q Bar in Ft. Lauderdale and last night at The FunkyBiscuit in Boca Raton. Biscuit Fest is an annual event and features artists local and imported. They announced "Doors Open at 3PM". The doors to the Biscuit were open but the live music was outdoors on the patio and provided by the "Bad Apple Brass Band", namely Andres Abreu (drums), Kevin Muncy (sax), Dan Palace (trumpet) and providing the foundation Branden Stair (sousaphone). Their selections were straight out of Louisiana---some Dixieland. A little second line. The taste of the bayou. Piano Bob was already there. Nancy and Jimmy Belize showed up. Then as promised, Rockin' Jake introduced me to his Mom,(Rockin' Mom) Eileen. We sat around enjoying the music and some adult beverages. Mark Telesca and his beautiful wife joined the party as well as Graham Drout and RoseAnne. The songs played included "Ain't Nothin' But A Party", "Down By the Riverside"."Hopin' You Come Back to Me", Iko-Iko" "Voodoo Groove" and of course "Saints Go Marchin' In". They marched us in to the Funky Biscuit a little after 5PM and a night of unforgettable music and fun. On stage were Rockin' Jake (harp) Mark Telesca (bass), John Ginty (B3), Ron Holloway(sax) Billy Iuso (guitar), Drew Preston (guitar) and Kenny Ginty (drums), Billy opened singing "Tell Me When I Can Come Home". Drew doesn't wait long to deliver one of his 5* solos. When was the last time you heard a live BLUES band play "Hand Jive"? They had fun with it and so did the full house audience. We would hear a lot of outstanding B3 all night and John kicked it off using all of what that instrument could provide. Ron on sax wasn't far behind. Next, Drew took the mic to sing "I Thought I Had A Chance". I think he wrote it. He continued to impress with his instrumental work. Rockin' Jake took a turn with "Hootchie Kootchie Man" and Ron Hollaway brought back memories of Illinois Jacquet, way back in yesteryear. If you think Billy is gonna' be on stage and let someone else steal the spotlight, fuggedda bout it! Billy polished every string all the way up and down. Then Kenny almost beat the skins off the drum kit. "Why'd You Wait So Long" gave Mark the chance to show off and he did. Drew and Billy traded solo sections to close their portion of the show. I see a familiar face taking the stage. It's Albert Castiglia( you say Ka steel yuh, I say Kuh stig lee a). John is going to stay at the B3. Billy will stay aboard. Matt Schuler will take over the bass duties and Bob Amsel (he's a pretty good lawyer too) will use the sticks. Albert intros the tune using his left hand only and then a slide to do "Tall Walkin' Blues". Albert, Billy and John have a swinging 'thang' going with the BLUES version f "C-Jam".

I don't whether its "showmanship" or "showing-off" when albert uses only his left hand to pay wile sipping a beer right handed. Graham is in the audience and Albert gives him all the respect due when he does his composition "Searching the Desert For he Blues". The lyric to "Have You No Shame" are right out of the 50's but the melody itself is pure unadulterated BLUES. "Put Some Stank On It" has Albert and John trading upbeat solos. "Bad Avenue"---Albert sings, Billy kills on guitar, John has me out of my seat and then Ron Holloway blows the walls down. Did I leave out Matt and Bob---hey they keep this whole thing together. John Schofield joins the band for "Let The Big Dog Eat"--John was not born or raised in the U.S. but he sure can play the music. Billy intro'd a Buddy Guy tune from way back and each of the guitars on stage met standing applause at the end of their solos. Next up was Southern Hospitality. Victor Wainwright on the B3, Damon Fowler(guitar/vocals), Chris Peet (drums) and Matt Walker(bass)----and making all of us happy J.P. Soars is on stage------A young Nick Black would help with the vocals and play a little guitar. I have 6 pages of hand scribbled notes about what happened next. I would need a dictionary, a thesaurus and another 2 years of English lessons to describe the music I heard. Damon sung his heart out with "Angels Gonna Sing My Name". J.P. brought Stevie Ray Vaughan back to life. They had us all clappin' n'  tappin' with "Don't Boogie Woogie When You Say Your Prayers Tonight". That tune is a plain old happy song. Smile on my face all the way through. "Easy Living", "Neck Bones & Home Fries" and "Catch Me When I Fall"(It may be called Wine, Wine and Whiskey Again) are on the play list. Albert gets back up to sing "My Baby Got A Black Cat Bone". Ain't nobody in the house sitting down. Victor almost tears the keys off the B3. J.P.s solo, pure and simple (just the way I like it) Young Nick Black starts out feeling his way and builds into a rip-roaring BLUES solo-----oooooweeee!. You ain't heard the BLUES 'til you hear these guys do "Don't Feel Like Going There Today"---Damon sings the lyric and Victor tells the story in dramatic B3 melodic lines. Victor gets a chance at vocalizing with "When The Rain Turned The Whole World Blue". I still have 5 pages of notes but I grow weary of the task----skip to the jam----It seems like there are a hundred BLUES musicians on stage including Terrence Grayson on bass and Billy Dean playing drums. Piano Bob squeezes his way to the keyboard. If you know how to close a show, then you know that "Shake Your Money Maker" will send everyone home glad that they came.

Ray is the Sound Engineer at the Biscuit. Every musician who plays the joint owes him a great big "Thanks". I owe the same thanks to all the musicians who make my life such a joy to live. When it comes to club-owners or operators, I generally don't have nice things to say, but in this case I sincerely say Thank You to Albert Poliak for his support of the BLUES.

I never mention a name without asking permission. "Pardon me, Miss. Would you like to dance?"

Most of the time...(...and yesterday was time well spent for Allen Kanovsky at Mess O' Blues, BBQ & Brews Festival!)

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 03/29/15

...if you are a BLUESiac listening to good BLUES it's late at night and the joint you're in is as dark as it is outside. The difference being it generally smells better outside.

Yesterday presented a completely different listening environment. Outdoors on a glorious South Florida afternoon. 7 or 8 food carts and trucks sending the aroma of B.B.Q. into the soft March breeze. Mess O' Blues, BBQ & Brews presented four of the best BLUES bands visiting from the Bayou (Larry Garner Band), Chicago (Zora Young backed by Little Mike & The Tornadoes), from Kansas City (Grand Marquis), and from Memphis (The Ghost Town Blues Band). I had a front row seat, --- bring your own chair --- next to Piano Bob and Patricia Reybold. The audience was a mixture of people a lot younger than me, people somewhat younger than me, people almost as old as me, and me--far and away the oldest one there. Alyona Ushe, CEO and Suzanne Holtermann, Marketing Director, for BaCA are there as well of loads of BLUES lovers.

Larry Garner and his band out of Louisiana opened the show with some standards and a few originals. (Guitar - Jared Daigle,   Bass - Shedrick  Nellon, Drums - Karl Beaudreau.) Readers know that generally I like to give the playlists. I could not adjust the brightness on my DROID and so note taking was impossible---result no notes---. No names of tunes. Just good listening to exceptional musicians all afternoon. From the bayou to Texas, Chicago to the Crossroads,  Memphis to NOLA. All of the bands that performed displayed versatility to all the variations of the BLUES. Grand Marquis is fronted by Bryan Redmond. He does the fun filled vocals as well as playing all the saxes--bari, tenor, alto and soprano. Alongside is Chad Boydston on trumpet providing hi-lights and soaring solos. Ryan Wurtz, lead guitar which is indispensable to any BLUES band. Ben Roth, stand-up bass and occasional Sousaphone. Lisa McKenzie is the driving force on drums. Included in their playlist (result of research) were "Bed of Nails", "Reputation", "Blues and Trouble" and "The Jungle". I thought I was having a good time with Larry Garner--this upped the ante. Now I doubled down with Little Mike and The Tornadoes. Rusty Zinn (newest member, drums), Brad Vickers (bass) Tony O (lead guitar) and Little Mike playing harp and singing the lyrics. They would have "The Princess of the BLUES, Zora Young, featured during their portion of the show. Sorry no play list. All I can say is BLUES like it’s meant to be played, sung and listened to do. They played a long set and every second provided pleasure for the ever growing audience.  Off to one side a gal was shaking it a bit. She was tall---you know me and tall woman. Being my shy self I addressed her, "Pardon me, miss". She looked me straight in the eye--"Yes?". "Don't want to seem rude but I find tall women attractive" "Thank you" and she starts to turn away. "Pardon me, miss, I am not done". "Oh". "I also like blonds". "Really" Again she starts to turn. "Miss, There's something else". Facing me once more, I say "I also like pretty faces" Allow me to say that the next step or two might involve might involve the purchase of a ring or a trip. She gave me her name-----G.D. Droid lost in my notes!!!!. Coming on stage is The Ghost Town Band out of Memphis. The Beale Street influence is evident in the way this band of excellent musicians plays the BLUES. Matt Isbell (guitar) leads with Preston McEven on drums, Jeremy Powell (keyboard),  Suavo Jones (vocals), Josh Roberts (bass) and Marque Boyd (trombone and crowd pleaser). This is a straight-ahead, no nonsense but fun loving BLUES band. Every single of the 12 to 13 hundred member audience was bobbing their heads and applauding with approval. The sun was setting on a wondrous day of music at the Pompano Beach Mess O’ BLUES, BBQ and Brews.

Congratulations on a great inaugural event. Good wishes for more to come.

Headed for a usual haunt. First person I saw when I walked in was Ricky Pinters (keyboards) sitting at the bar. We always kid about a $5 debt---which way the owing continues to be a question --- I whisper in his ear, "If you don't pay me my five bucks I will---I don't get a chance to finish---"Al' and he turns to crush me in his massive arms. I get my elbow down just in time to save the stitches from my recent surgery from being torn open. We laugh and joke and renew an old friendship. I want to stay but there's a $5 cover. It is insulting to me. I support live musicians and the memory of the others. Outside of a few club owners who respect the musicians who play their joints I do not support club owners. If they asked for $5 in the tip jar I would personally contribute and be glad to walk around with the bucket. In addition --$5-- in today's money it is a negligible amount ---are there any $2 hookers anymore? From now on I will review the musicians who play there, but there will be no more mention of the club name or location.

Off to the Q Bar and Rockin' Jake. You can count on Jake for an honest and true BLUES performance. Jake plays harp and does vocals. With him are Anton LaPlume (guitar/vocals), Brett Crook (drums) and Cleveland Fredericks on bass. I stayed for a dark beer, shrimp and grits, coffee and 2 sets of BLUES-BLUES-BLUES. I made note of the playlist but it's getting late. Rockin' Jake promised to introduce me to his Mom if I showed up at the Biscuit Fest (The Funky Biscuit). Here I go--shower, shave, fresh shirt, maybe even socks----any questions?
