...speak Spanish to appreciate Latin rhythms.
It is as natural
as a heart beat. Whether it's Mambo, Merengue, Guaguanco, Macarena, Samba,
Bolero, Salsa or any of the others, they all encourage people to shake
something or other. Ranses Colon (bass) is a talented musician with an interesting history. Last night he led his band at a Ft. Lauderdale JAZZ club.
Luz Jiminez (vocalist was backed by Ismael Chavez (congas/vocals), Manuel
Gamez (piano) Jose Oliviera (tenor sax) and Paul Rabat (drums). Sitting in with the
Ranses band was Phil Cachi Velez on Latin Percussion. Unfortunately, I
can not name most of the tunes they played although I recognized many of them.
Titles really don't matter, talent does. This is a talented group that delivers
no matter the native origin of the songs. Ismael and the band are adept at the
technique known as "Soneo". This is unique to the Cuban sound. It has
the chorus doing a pattern and the lead vocalist improvising lyric lines in
return. Beny More and Celia Cruz were just a couple who utilized the
technique. The rhythms finally got to me and I danced with a woman named Sheila
and a lady snowbird whose name is Delores and hails from Connecticut. I had a
great time listening to the music and moving these old bones dancing with two lovely females.
Earlier Anthony Corrado entertained during cocktail hour. In
place of Paul Banman on piano was Valerio Cantare. Shay Eishen was on drums
with Gene Cappelli sitting in on trumpet along with Burt Boice on bass
guitar. Yesterdays program was dedicated to a recently passed saxophonist,
Joseph Vincentore. He lived and continued playing through his 96th year.
Gene has brilliant tone and displayed it during "Night In Tunisia".
Anthony's repertoire is extensive as well as the number of instruments he
plays. Lisa Messing was invited up and did a JAZZ standard. Anthony and Gene
took it to New Orleans with their interpretation of "Has Anybody Seen My
Gal" which morphed into "Saints". . Valerio sang a love song, in
Italian, for one of my favorite girls, Babette. During one of the tunes
Gene and his wife Shirley were up and dancing a classic rhumba.
They send best
wishes to my pal Bill Rutan who is in recovery from knee surgery. He may be
able to really dance soon. Just so you don't anticipate too
much pleasure from watching his terpischoreal efforts let me just say that Bill
dances "white boy".
Al's Disclaimer:
A short note: The reason I write this is because I love music and words. I do not book acts. I do not promote acts. I do not accept invitations to review artists. I go to venues of my own choice. When and where is not influenced by anything other than who I would like to hear that night or day. If I don't like what I hear, I won't write about it. When I like it I let you all know. I never mention a name without asking permission. "Pardon me, Miss. Would you like to dance?"
