...most inopportune times.
Disaster in the form of lost
electronic notes or messages.
I finally learned to use notepad on my cel. Wow,
no pen, no paper, no fear of spills. Instead a crash. I mean kablooie.
Nothing. Nada. Nenta. Zeus. Zip.
Everything gone in an instant.
Just as I was
going to write a rave review of the performance by Ignacio Berroa (drums) with
David Fernandez (Ewi/tenor) Hector Gola (bass guitar) and Martin Bejerano on
piano. Being an all Latin band my expectancy was an evening of salsa rhythms. Instead
I got a heavy dose of JAZZ. Real JAZZ. Some straight ahead, some today, some
tomorrow, and even some day after tomorrow. They did Thelonius, Miles and
others. Their way and no nonsense. Every solo was perfect. Ignacio mastery of
the kit and 10,000 or more rhytmic patterns was almost unbelievable. David,
Martin and Hector rose to the occasion and deliverd thoughtful and creative
solos. Unison work was spot on and I and the rest of the audience listened in
rapt attention.
The loss of my notes has forced me to leave out some details.
The important thing is that I was treated to an exceptional evening of JAZZ as
it is being played today. Thank you, Ignacio, David, Martin and Hector.
This all happened at Arts Garage last night. More great JAZZ to come.
Al's Disclaimer:
A short note: The reason I write this is because I love music and words. I do not book acts. I do not promote acts. I do not accept invitations to review artists. I go to venues of my own choice. When and where is not influenced by anything other than who I would like to hear that night or day. If I don't like what I hear, I won't write about it. When I like it I let you all know. I never mention a name without asking permission. "Pardon me, Miss. Would you like to dance?"
