To review or...(Allen Kanovsky is at war with his devils once again.)

...not to review? It is a decision of conscience.

Sunday night is Latin night at a joint I frequent on 33St. in Ft. Lauderdale. Before the dance music starts Anthony Corrado (multi-instrumentalist) hosts a jam. With him are Sahy Eishen (drums) and Paul Banman (piano/keyboard). I arrived to hear the last few bars of "God Bless America" a tune not often heard in JAZZ clubs. It brought clamorous applause. The trio did "Take Five". Matt Jordan(trumpet) joined them for "So What". Carol Jackson came up to sing "Stormy Weather" and "Quiet Nights". All was good. I was enjoying the Live music and my bourbon based libation. Ranses Colon and his band were the feature for the Latin portion. I have heard this band before. This time the band was abbreviated. Ismael Chavez (percussion), Manuel Gamez (piano) and Paul Rabat (drums). they were joined by Ms. Jenny Love (vocals). No bass, no guitar, no saxophone. In their place were 3 or 4 boxes and tablets that would provide, electronically, a bigger band sound background.

I review live music. Tracks disturb me as I don't really have an appreciation of 'manufactured' music. The saving grace was Jenny's voice. She overcame the deleterious effects of the canned music to deliver several great vocals. I was impressed by her vocal tone, thinking it would be perfect for JAZZ. When speaking with her later she let me know that JAZZ is her favorite genre and she does sing with JAZZ groups. Barbara Glenn sat in to do "Funny Valentine" and "Girl From Ipanema". The pianist had difficulty in finding Barbara's key in both songs. It should not have been difficult for a trained musician, unless it had to do with her being a 'gringa'.

Jenny had noticed my dancing and inquired as to my heritage. Was I Puerto Rican or maybe Italian? I responded that "No, I' the fat Jewish kid from The Bronx". There were a lot of folks there who were either Jewish or from The Bronx who responded with cheers.

Bobby Nathan had a birthday bash going on across the street. Maybe, I should have been there. Martine & Jacques, Piano Bob and Jerry Mascaro joined me during different moments of the evening. I was glad for the company.

Al's Disclaimer:
A short note: The reason I write this is because I love music and words. I do not book acts. I do not promote acts. I do not accept invitations to review artists. I go to venues of my own choice. When and where is not influenced by anything other than who I would like to hear that night or day. If I don't like what I hear, I won't write about it. When I like it I let you all know. I never mention a name without asking permission. "Pardon me, Miss. Would you like to dance?"
