The Sunshine Jazz Concert Series
continues at Miami Shores Country Club with the rhythmic jazz of Miami’s
popular Latin band Oriente! The quintet is known for their signature sound –
melodic and soulful guitar and bass, with bold brass harmonies, hot Cuban
percussion and bluesy vocals. Oriente
debuted in New Orleans at famed Snug Harbor Jazz Club in the mid-90s and remains
very influenced by that city’s musical history and its connection to Cuba.
The bandleader is guitarist, lyricist,
composer and arranger Eddy Balzola, accompanied by bassist Dony Felix,
percussionist Yoel Del Sol, trombonist William Paredes and drummer Orlando
Machado, with all but one member born in Cuba. Bassist Dony is from Haiti with
roots that blend perfectly with the Afro-Cuban traditional rhythms. This fusion
of musical heritage with extensive jazz education, recording and performance
experiences creates Oriente’s unique sound and style.
They’ve performed at hundreds of
concerts and events and international festivals, including a Dept of Defense
tour, and regularly at local venues including Soyka’s, the Loews Hemisphere
Lounge, The Van Dyke, Le Chat Noir Jazz Club etc. Oriente’s repertoire covers classic and Latin
jazz, New Orleans blues, tropical jazz, and creative original songs.
