SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENT MUSICIANS
JEANETTE M.
RUSSELL JAZZ SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The Gold Coast Jazz Society will be accepting applications for the Jeanette M. Russell Jazz Scholarship Program. Scholarships enable student jazz musicians in high school and college an opportunity to attend 2014 summer music camps and provide tuition support for jazz students attending colleges or universities, majoring in jazz, beginning in the fall of 2014. March 3, 2014 is the deadline to submit applications for consideration. Download scholarship guidelines and applications at http://www.goldcoastjazz.org/gcjs_scholarships.phtml
Qualifying students will be invited to participate in a live musical audition for scholarship awards on April 19, 2014 at the Dillard Center for the Arts, Dillard High School, 2501 NW 11th Street in Fort Lauderdale. The competition will be free and open to the public to attend.
Through a generous bequest from the estate of Jeanette M. Russell, the Gold Coast Jazz Society has awarded over $350,000 in scholarship awards in recent years to students from middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities pursing studies in jazz. Affectionately known as “Lady Jazz,” Russell was a longtime supporter of jazz and of the Gold Coast Jazz Society. Originally from New York City, Russell was a fashion designer and consultant to prominent clients, one of whom was John Hammond, a jazz promoter and producer who introduced Russell to Benny Goodman. At his urging she became involved in the jazz scene in New York and became intimate friends with jazz musicians, record producers and writers. Mona Hinton, wife of famed bassist Milt Hinton, dubbed her “Lady Jazz.”
The Gold Coast Jazz Society is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to perpetuate and advance the cultural art form of jazz through performances, education and outreach activities.
