Lucky Peterson, one of the preeminent blues performers of the last half century, heads the impressive lineup for Treasure Island’s inaugural Bikini Blues Bash, presented by the City of Treasure Island Parks & Recreation Department, the Beach Beacon, Suncoast Surf Shop and the Suncoast Blues Society. The 10-hour blues bash happens Saturday, April 28, 2012, on the Treasure Island beach at 104th & Gulf Boulevard, Treasure Island, Florida, beginning at noon.

A child prodigy in the seventies, Lucky Peterson made his name through his electrifying live performances in the 80’s and 90’s, and is now a true blues veteran. St. Petersburg’s Sarasota Slim, having worked and toured with Lucky back in the day, backs up Lucky Peterson featuring Tamara Peterson, with his band at 7pm.

The Bikini Blues Bash goes old-school at 5:30pm with Little Jake Mitchell and the Soul Searchers, an authentic soul and blues eight-piece band out of Gainesville, Florida. Little Jake grew up in Tampa, and as a teenager sang in traveling road shows that included the likes of B.B. King, Sam Cooke and James Brown.

Tampa’s Betty Fox & the Dirty Bastards blow the roof off every important venue they play - good thing they’re outdoors at the Bash. But soul is what it’s all about, and over the band’s solid, salty backbeats, between Josh Nelms’ articulate guitar solos, Ms. Fox proves her melodious mettle when she often casts aside the microphone and sings to us anyway, easily felt and heard over the full power of her band mates. She’s that good. They play at 3pm. Treasure Island’s Charlie Morris has been kicking around the Florida Bluescoast longer than he cares to admit, but he knows how to pick a guitar and make it sing, with a down-home rock ‘n’ roll blues quality to his wryly original songs. Charlie takes the stage at 1:15pm, after an opening set at noon from Gulfport’s favorite bluesmiths, the Paul Anthony Band.

And those bikinis we speak of? You might see a few at the stand-up paddleboard demonstration from the Suncoast Surf Shop around 4:30, or at the free high-energy Zumba® fitness demonstration on the beach. Throughout the festival grounds, enjoy tasty seafood, barbeque, island cuisine, and other culinary treats. Festival vendors also include arts & crafts. Beer and wine are also available.

All-day Bikini Blues Bash parking directly on the beach is $10. Parking entrance is at 112th &
Gulf Boulevard
, across the street from the Waffle House. Info at 727-547-4575 ext. 237 and at www.mytreasureisland.org.
