Attn: Florida jazz recording artists:
I have been approached by the leading internet jazz station/platform in Europe to present a show based on artists that I feel are worthy of representing the jazz scene here in Florida . I would need to present 24 tracks each month in a mix of new and old recordings.
Although there are many distribution platforms out there on the web, and probably many more that used to be out there that failed, this one has the quality, substance and presence to make it worth looking into much deeper. This is of course a non-income producing undertaking – mostly an expense of time, but it is being considered due to the potential exposure for Jazz & Blues Florida and the Florida scene overall.
What I need to know from you is if you would be willing to participate by providing the music that would become potential program content. I can’t commit to the programming without knowing that I will have the content to create the show around.
Would you contribute your music? Please let me know your thoughts on this, as I am relying heavily on this poll to determine if I should allocate the resources to go this route at this time. Please leave a comment below.
If you DID NOT receive an email message to visit this blog, please email me at Charlie@JazzBluesFlorida.com to make sure we are connected and you stay in the loop on this and other Florida music matters.
As a closing note, I can tell you that the world is already interested in what is going on here in Florida. Our web sites have visitors from over 100 countries each year (over 50 MONTHLY!) and our email list reaches every continent, except Antarctica.
Thanks!
Charlie”

DeleteDuly noted and we keep you posted on developments. I have been looking into something like this for years and it seems the timing and the platform are getting alined to do it right.
Hi Charlie,
DeleteI think this is a great idea, and thank you ahead of time for even considering it!
Could benefit everyone involved, in that lesser recognized local talents could increase their profile. Their efforts will become realized within an appreciative and engaged listening base. Not to mention, provide some awareness to the potent artist culture and offerings lurking in the backdrop in this region of the country/world.
Forgive the shameless plug...
I'd be honored if some of my recorded tracks and profile could be submitted.
Thank you,
John Ricci

If musicians are to provide content etc.. I am sure there will be concerns about copyrights of songs etc... Will all songs have to be originals or could they be covers also?
ReplyDeleteI am sure it will be a huge expense of time for you (Charlie)
I would be interested in contributing content.
Thanks
JB
Thanks JB. I have requested specifics in this area. Being in that special category of "nothing left to lose" which translates to "nothing left to take" I am not too worried about lawyers myself, but if I get into this you can bet your bass that I will make sure no gets to where I am because of me!
Delete"...no ONE gets to...
DeleteHi Charlie,
ReplyDeleteChuck Bergeron here. YES, I would contribute music
to this project and I think you should pursue it.
Also, you could get tremendous help and support from the Miami Jazz Co-op.
Go for it!
Thanks Chuck. Your input here is substantial and respected. Thanks.
DeleteI think this is an amazing opportunity for Florida Jazz artists to get their music heard & I applaud you Charlie for once more being willing to go the extra mile & do the work to promote Jazz. You can count on me for any help at all. It's time for me to get back in the studio anyway & this just gimore incentive. So yes, I would be willing to contribute my music.
ReplyDeleteThanks Deborah! With good people like you behind such an effort, it doesn't seem so daunting!
DeleteI would definitely be willing to submit my band's music for the radio program. Our first album will be released this June and the more people we can reach the better!
ReplyDeleteHey Zach! Thanks, and it may be hard to take, but it is all about you and the others like you that are actively building on the classroom stuff and working hard at playing out for the people that need your music. Don't despair!
DeleteJB-I have requested specific info on the rights question. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi Charlie
ReplyDeleteYes It's an Opportunity we can't pass up...
You can count on Rocco Blu
Thank you Frank. We will keep you posted and will need your help to get the active, but under-communicated NE scene represented!
DeleteHi Charlie,

We record on Video or Audio nearly all of out major concerts which number about 3 ea 2 hour concerts per month. I woulkd be interested in what you find out RE the rights question. Most of our music was written before 1940 and alot before 1930. i think you get on-linew announcements of all our concerets

Sure thing Troy! I bet this has something to do with all pretty ladies you met on your recent North Euro tour, or no? Call me if you need a valet on the next trip!
DeleteHey Charlie, I would also love to contribute to this...whatever you need!
ReplyDeleteBest regards, Andy Lutkoff/Saxdance

Thanks Andy... stay tuned and we will see where this goes. I just looked at the stats and almost 100 of the 660 jazz ers I sent emails have checked out the posting, but only 15 of them posted a response, as you did. I am thinking I will need about 100 involved so if two cuts are used for each I will have enough material to make it for 8 months to get things started. Just guessing now!
DeleteCharlie, I will also contribute my music but it is all covers so as some of the others have expressed thats an issue. I will help you anyway I can .
ReplyDeleteBarbara Van
I hope to post a concise response to this by Monday so we know where we are going. Thanks for your unfaltering support and music!
DeleteNeil Rogers
ReplyDeleteCharlie, this sounds like a very interesting project. I will contribute music with Ira Sullivan, Gary Campbell,Don Coffman, Von Henry, Neil Bacher, Jim Kessler, Sam Chioto, Rick Dahl and myself. I think this is a good represention of S. Florida Jazz.
Neil Rogers
Hey Charlie; sounds like a wonderful opportunity to spread the word....of course; I'd be happy to contribute in any way possible.
DeleteThanks,
Norm
Super! Time for me start working on the May edition of JBF, so look for a follow up posting after May 3rd!

Sure Charlie, I'm onboard for helping promote our music. Just tell me where and what to send. Regards, Freddie Jacobs
ReplyDeletePS: you missed some really good sets at Soyka with Don Wilner, Mike Gerber & moi !
Keep up the good work buddy...
Yes, Freddie, I miss a lot of good sets, for the simple and direct reason that it requires income from advertising sales to attend music events. Jazz & Blues Florida is my sole source of income - this is not a hobby or a weekend pastime that is supported by any other means - and if there is no income, there is no gas (much less car!), food, beverage, parking, time, et al, that is involved with getting out for live music. And, out of respect for those that do support what I do in this manner, I do not take the income from their investment in themselves and spend it at other places that do not support what I do.
DeleteHi Charlie,
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great opportunity, I think you should go for it!
I will contribute with tracks from my CDs.
Thank you!
Beatriz Malnic
Your help will be appreciated, by me and the listeners! Thanks!
DeleteHey Charlie,
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Sammy received this, and I'm sure he'd be very into it, as well as other artists I've recorded with, including Pete Wallace, Clay Ostwald (from the Miami Sound Machine/Gloria Estefan), who has the group called 7 Crossing". My group, Urban Gypsy will also be glad to contribute when we finish our first project.
Thanks!
John
Good Mornin' Charlie. I'm on day 3 of gig 3, singing Jazz in Florida. MANY Jazz musicians live Florida, some move here to retire, but many to continue performing at some level while residing in the warmer weather & in a right-to-work state. Personally, although based in Jacksonville since my parents moved us there when I was a child, I travel nationally/internationally performing & doing jazz clinics. I was one of 7 or so jazz artists in Florida featured in the book,"The New Face of Jazz," (Amazon.com)profiling the lifestyles & work of today's jazz artists. With 'snowbirds,' retiries living in Fla who follow the music, corporate work, cruis ship work, festivals, jazz societies, high school-collegiate jazz programs of study, retirement communities that host music, and the annual January FMEA Music Convention (the 4th largest in the country)in Tampa which presents the prestigous All-state Jazz Band & other jazz (and classical) concerts education clinics, Florida hosts a lot of Jazz. So I think it would indeed be a worthwhile venture! Over the years, through our website, the selling of our CD's, videos, nuturing our following, media promotion & performances, my husband, trumpeter JB Scott, and I have become highly established jazz artists/clinicians. So you don't have to live in New York City or L.A. if you are savvy at promotion and offer a quality music 'product' that the public/market wants. Jazz music crosses all generations, from the listeners who grow up listening to and dancing to it, to the new generations hearing it for the first time at a festival or on youtube and studying it in school bands to become the next generation of jazz artists and appreciators. We would love to contribute our music and stories to your project and can share the names of many other Florida based jazz artists, including the legendary Bunky Green, Dr. Bill Prince, saxophonist Ed Calle, Don Zentz, and MANY others. Lisa Kelly, jazz vocal artist/clinician : )
ReplyDelete.. other names, legendary Larry Elgart (the last of the original band leaders from the tale end of Big Band Era), trombonist Bill Allred, drummer Eddie Metz, Jr, trombonist Dave Stienmeyer (led the Airmen of Note for 14+ yrs), trombonist Herb Bruce, pianist Jeff Phillips, clarinetist Jim Snyder, pianist Lynn Ariale, singer Linda Cole, drummer Clyde Connor (with Navy Commodors for years) reed player Terry Myers, vocalist Kevin Mohogany,bassist/pianist Richard Drexler, saxophonist Jeff Rupert, pianist Per Danielsson, clarinetist Allan Vache - there are soooo many! Jazz being nurtured at UNF, UCF, FSU, FIU, FAMU & other college jazz programs & jazz music camps, & at times, the Disney Parks/cruises still offer some work, bringing in musicians. LK : )
ReplyDeleteHi
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your future Show Charlie.. The Internet has that "Hear & Now" possibility 24-7 and with all the Bells an Whistles available like Skype many live/canned participants can contribute at the same time. I will post this on your Blog and be Glad to help you as you have always extended help to the Music community and many times to me.
Thanks

Hi Charlie
ReplyDeleteCount me in.
I have a small digital recorder and have a back log of live local stuff.
possibly that is something that could be used for the show
just let me know.
Also as a side line I do music for television libraries and have some unsold stuff that
fusion-ish which might be apropos. I don't think you'll have problems getting once the ball is rolling
especially if the media format would be high quality MP3s that could simply be emailed to you ..
looking forward to see what develops

Charlie, Great idea...would love to participate...Al Ferrante, Father Al and The Jazz Congregation.
ReplyDeleteHello Charlie,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a great idea. There's a lot of great musicians here in S. Florida and the more people know about the jazz scene down here the better. Also, people visiting will will know they can find out whats happening in "Jazz & Blues Florida". I have a number of recordings with the The Last Flight Out Big Band that I would be happy to submit for your project. Thanks. Mark Fernicola
Sure, Charlie. I've got 5 cds and quite a of original tunes on them with artists such as Ira Sullivan and Donald Brown. Get in touch when you can and we'll speak about it. Best to you.

Of course we'd be interested in having Sammy's music on this platform!!! Not only is Sammy's label and distribution based in Berlin, he'll be touring Europe twice this year with Sonny Rollins and naturally any opportunity to maximize his profile is welcome.
ReplyDeletewarm regards,

Hi Charlie,
ReplyDeleteI appreciate all you're doing...and, as long as Ascap and BMI are ok with things....I'll be glad to have you share my music with the Universe. I just have fear of flogging.

Charlie,
ReplyDeleteAre you looking for original music to present on this program? I'd like to help, but if you're looking for originals I would need to do some studio work first; which is possible. Good luck in any case. If you get a chance, check me out at Blue Jean Blues on Monday night April 30 in Ft. Lauderdale. Maybe we can talk then.

Hello Charles,
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful testament to the high quality of the Jazz musicians here in South Florida. and I think it is great that you have taken the initiative to help promote the music of so many great Jazz players in our area. Thank you also for reaching out to the community for ideas and to poll their preferences.
Here is my two cents worth for 'best of': Bass - Jaimie Ousley and Nicky Orta; Latin Jazz Piano: Miguel Rena and Jose Negroni; Maiinstream Jazz Piano: Mike Levine and Brian Murphy; Drums: Danny Burger; Sax: Jesse Jones and Turk Mauro; Jazz Vocals: Dana Paul and Alice Day; Big Band: The Jaco Pastorius Big Band.
Thanks for all of your efforts in promoting live music in South Florida.
Jerry Mascaro
Hi Charlie, If you're looking for unique South Florida talent get Michael Bianco on board. Most of his CD material was recorded live, so it does not sound "canned". For more standard talent I like Anthony Corado and Len Perry. They are all avid users of facebook, but if you need more contact information drop me a note. Robert Mason
ReplyDeleteHi Charlie!
ReplyDeleteI would be happy to contribute my music to this European project, if you undertake it!

Charlie--
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great idea. It is important to clarify the BMI-ASCAP issues that J.B. raised. Any way to further promote the fine musicians living and creating music here in Florida (Ira Sullivan, Kenny Drew Jr., Bunky Green) is a positive. I would definitely contribute music for such a project.
