Florida Musician David Brophy Passes

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Please follow this link to the news of David's passing, and the thoughts and feelings of the music community that new and loved him...
http://limestonelounge.yuku.com/reply/62184/t/Re-Dave-Brophy.html

Here is the reposting of last week's blog entry:

(A friend passed this on to us. Charlie)

DAVID BROPHY
Our great friend and fellow musician David Brophy is in the final stage of his fight with cancer.

The doctors have placed him in a drug-induced coma to alleviate his pain and suffering. He’s probably not going to improve and he’s probably not going to regain consciousness.

David spent his whole life playing music and making other people happy. He was a great singer, a fine guitarist, and a truly one of a kind personality.

Dave was equally at home in a number of musical genres: Soul, R&B, Blues, Country, and Rock; he played them all with conviction and humor for over 45 years, most of them here in South Florida.

Dave sang in his first band in 1964; a British Invasion and Soul group called The Harvard Beats.

By 1966 The Harvard Beats had morphed into Dave and The Soul Brothers, a successful teen band that played throughout South Florida, frequently at The Fontainebleau, Miami Beach.

He turned this entire school on to Soul music at a pep rally he in ‘66, doing James Brown and Wayne Cochran songs. His favorite artist was Otis Redding.

Dave did the whole live set of James Brown at the Apollo, including "Please Please Please" where he wore his cape and fell to his knees. His favorite artist was Otis Redding

In 1967 he was performing with his next band The Force

Later Dave moved to Bel Air Maryland in 1968 and formed The Wild Oats.
They were vegetarians and they began writing their own material.
The band lived on a 20-acre farm and played Baltimore area.

Later, he relocated to Santa Cruz, California and recorded with The Red Ragged Rose, who recorded a single- a red 45.

He moved back to Florida and performed country music with the Backwoods Boogie Band.

He spent the following years playing with Nicole Yarling and The Weld, The Ravens, Stan Street, Raiford Starke, The 18 Wheelers, Piano Bob, and a host of others.

This coming Monday evening, November 15th, we’re having a get-together to celebrate the life our great friend, David Brophy, at The Luna Star Café, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Come and share your memories of Dave with others who loved him and were touched by his unique gifts of good tunes and good times.

You’re free to bring your music too. There will be an open mic for anyone who wishes to play.

---------------------
The Area Stage Company is very pleased to present Drummer/Manager/Producer/Band Leader Jerry Fischer and his Jazz Orchestra on Sunday November 21st at 4:00 pm, featuring Joe Donato, Brian Murphy, Mike Brignola and Brenda Alford.

After graduating from the High School of Performing Arts in New York City, Jerry Fischer won a scholarship to the Manhattan School of Music. That first year, he performed in six Broadway shows. He was hired to work on numerous industrial shows for American Airlines, General Motors, Ford, and United Airlines while working closely with Cy Coleman, Sammy Cahn, Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse. Soon Jerry became Liza Minelli’s first drummer/conductor, as well as personnel manager for Liza’s first major road tour, which he also orchestrated. His professional career includes working with Ben Vereen’s first night club act which he co-produced and co-managed, and traveling extensively with Diahann Carrol, Joel Grey & Joey Heatherton.

Mr. Fischers’s vast musical knowledge and production experience has enabled him to currently produce one of the most unique orchestras in the industry. The musicians in THE JERRY FISCHER ORCHESTRA have been featured with Buddy Rich, Henry Mancini, Burt Bacharach, The Naval Commodores, Doc Severinsen and many others. Since 2005 Jerry has been producing musicians for the shows at the Hard Rock Cafe, in Hollywood Florida.

When Mr. Fischer came to Florida in 1995, there was a void in big bands and even a bigger void in the nature of music that was being played; the music from the West Coast bands he knew from his national tours was not being played in Florida. In 1996, he created the orchestra as a forum for professional musicians, and is now known as a challenging opportunity to perfect state of the art Jazz arrangements. After playing for a few clubs, it became so popular with jazz fans that it moved to Monday nights so the best musicians could join. These nights became a tradition at “ONE NIGHT STAN’S,” a small blues club in Hollywood, until its closing.

Every Monday night for almost a year, these group of talented musicians and performers indulge themselves in the art of jazz. And now, the Area Stage Company is pleased to introduce them to new audiences.

JOE DONATO. Joe has been with the band almost from the beginning. He is known in the jazz world as one of the most exciting saxophone players. He has his own group and does seminars and teaches at the Universities around the country.

BRIAN MURPHY. Originally from Toronto, where he played with the Rob McConnell band and was the arranger for many of TITO PUENTE’S albums.

MIKE BRIGNOLA. Mike is a world class baritone player and is currently the personnel manager for THE WOODY HERMAN BAND as well as being its baritone player.

NEAL BONSANTI. Neal is probably the most sought after saxophone players, as he also plays oboe and English horn and has taught in the Colleges in South Florida for 30 years. He currently heads up the Jazz Band at FAU.

Gold Coast Jazz Presents JazzSLAM Education Program in Fort Lauderdale Florida

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Math + Reading = Jazz

Gold Coast Jazz Presents JazzSLAM Education Program in Local Elementary Schools

Fort Lauderdale, FL – How can a jazz quartet teach math and reading concepts through music? Through a program called JazzSLAM. This fun and interactive program reinforces basic language arts and math concerts through the music of jazz. Students experience how improvisation is similar to writing essays. They learn how "read, think and explain" questions are similar to the "12 bar blues" how narrative essay form is similar to "A-A-B-A" song form; and how persuasive and expository essay forms are similar to the "verse-chorus" song form.

JazzSLAM, the acronym for Jazz Supports Language Arts & Math, is a program that uses students' interest in music to help them understand the inherent underlying structures found also in language arts and math. JazzSLAM was designed by local jazz musician and educator, Mari Mennell-Bell. The program is being presented by the Gold Coast Jazz Society in several local elementary schools from November through May.

Program creator, Mari Mennel-Bell, holds a dual Masters degree in Elementary Education (K-6) and Music Education (K-12) from New York University and a Masters degree in Social Work from Adelphi University. While living in New York City she worked for The Children's Television Workshop as a researcher and as an independent consultant on "Using Music to Teach Reading". When her children were in school in Broward County, she observed their challenges to stay focused on academics and was inspired to create an experiential, hands-on approach to academic skills so she developed a program that makes learning fun through the use of jazz.

Presentations of the JazzSLAM program will occur in November in the following schools:

Wed. Nov. 3 @ 9 AM
Chapel Trail Elementary School
19595 Taft St, Pembroke Pines 33029

Tues. Nov. 16 @ 9 AM
Lauderdale Manors Elementary
1400 NW 14th Ct, Fort Lauderdale 33311

Tues. Nov. 23 @ 9 AM
Sanders Park Elementary
800 NW 16th St., Pompano Beach, FL 33060

Funding for the JazzSLAM program is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council, the Annenberg Foundation, Funding Arts Broward, the School Board of Broward County and Target.

The Gold Coast Jazz Society, the presenter of this program, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of jazz music through a mainstage concert series, free community concerts, jazz education programs and other events. Go online www.goldcoastjazz.org for more information about the Gold Coast Jazz Society or call 954-524-0805.
