Three of the 11 semifinalists selected for the 2026 Herbie Hancock Institute International Jazz Vocals Competition have significant Florida connections, giving Florida jazz followers several familiar names to watch when the prestigious competition streams live from Paris October 10–11.
Miami jazz vocalist, composer and educator Three of the 11 semifinalists selected for the 2026 Herbie Hancock Institute International Jazz Vocals Competition have significant Florida connections, giving Florida jazz followers several familiar names to watch when the prestigious competition streams live from Paris October 10–11.
Miami jazz vocalist, composer and educator Ashley Pezzotti represents the strongest direct Florida connection in the international field. Pezzotti studied jazz vocals at the University of Miami and is currently an adjunct professor at Florida International University. A four-time National YoungArts winner, she has performed with artists including Wynton Marsalis, Arturo Sandoval, Dave Holland, Chick Corea and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
Two additional semifinalists have connections to the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. Joie Bianco, a vocalist, arranger, educator and bandleader from Staten Island, earned her bachelor’s degree from Frost before continuing graduate studies at the Manhattan School of Music. Kate Kortum, who grew up in Houston and earned her undergraduate degree at The Juilliard School, received her master’s degree from the University of Miami. Kortum is also the winner of the 2025 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition.
The 11 semifinalists, representing six countries, will compete Saturday, October 10 at Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. Three finalists will advance to the Finals on Sunday, October 11. More than $100,000 in scholarships and prizes will be awarded, including a $50,000 first-place award. The judging panel includes Patti Austin, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Roberta Gambarini, Gretchen Parlato and Gregory Porter.
The Sunday Finals will be followed by an All-Star Gala Concert featuring Herbie Hancock, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Gregory Porter, Arturo Sandoval, Patti Austin, Danilo PΓ©rez, Terri Lyne Carrington, Monty Alexander, Ambrose Akinmusire, John Patitucci and others. Sandoval, whose career has included a long association with South Florida, will receive the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz’s Maria Fisher Founder’s Award recognizing his contributions to jazz and music.
Both days will be streamed worldwide at no charge. The Saturday semifinals begin at 1 p.m. Paris time, or 7 a.m. Eastern, with the Sunday Finals and Gala beginning at 7:30 p.m. Paris time, or 1:30 p.m. Eastern. The Institute will stream the events through YouTube and other online platforms.
