"Oh, What A Night It Was...(Allen? Allen!? ALLEN KANOVSKY! WAKE UP!!)

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 10/3/13

...The Night I Met----Lilli Nicole McCloud. From a glistening clinging gown to a Michael Jackson costume to a Folies Bergere bustierre to the finale in skin-tight leather--a show that I will not soon forget. A long time friend from my CA years was in town on business and I suggested Blue Jeans Blues for a meeting with him, Luis Ortiz, his brother Mario and associate Boris. I had never heard Lilli before but BJB's was a convenient location for both of us. We were all real happy with the decision. The music---I know---I know! The band backing Ms. McCloud had A..J. Niles on guitar and vocals, Jason Roberts(drums), William Adderly(Keyboards) and T.J. Osborne(bass). They opened with a funky-BLUES and there was instant excitement all through the crowded house. Then Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Pride & Joy." I was in my element and the California contingent was clappin' and tappin'. They introduce Lilli and she takes the stage in that gown with a full-blown Afro hairdo. She does make an impression. Lilli Nicole is in the final four on the TV show X Factor and Melody gives her a token gift of a pair of X Factor glasses.  She opts for "What's Going On". Her voice is compelling and true. Her inner excitement drives the band into a jammin' groove. The musical temperature in the room is starting to rise. Next she sings "I Make You Crazy" and then descends into the audience for "Knock On Wood". The mood in the room is electric. Now she gets 'em up and dancing with "Rock Steady" and "Notion". Luis, Mario, Boris and I are enjoying the wine, food and the vision of all that shaking. The room is dead quiet (unusual for the BJB crowd) as Lilli sings "This Is No Ordinary Love". Luis, who at one time had an Asian girl friend tells me that in Chinese Lilli means "double beauty". Changing back to rock mode with "That's The Way I Like It" has my buddy Marc up on the floor with his college day moves. One of the most beautiful women I have seen in my life passes by. I can't help but follow her to her table. I tell her just what I told you. Her name is Marie LaTourtue. Her smile and personality match her beauty. Lilli sings "Superstition" and the band closes the set with an instrumental. She opens the 2d set dressed as Michael Jackson, gloves, hat and all. She does all of M.J.s tunes with appropriate hand and dance motions. Singing from on top of a table she has captured the audience. The band plays without her for a few minutes and when she returns, Lilli is in a black sequins bustierre.  Stop the trains, close the door and call the law, right now!!!!  She sings a medley of R&R songs from the 50's and 60's. Mario gets up to dance with the hottest lady in town, Susan Ashley. I would join her on the floor anywhere, any place, any time. You would probably be reading my "obit" shortly thereafter. During one of her songs, Ms. McCloud takes my hand, leading me on to the dance floor, to do a little shuffle with her. I later asked her why she chose me---her answer "You emit the vibe".  Again Lilli leaves the room for a costume and mood change. Now comes that skin-tight black leather. She turns her back to the audience, there are no kids in the audience, and that black leather covering her bottom does a little dance of its own. My blood pressure is soaring, there is pounding in my ears and my breath is coming in short gasps. She turns and does "Rollin' On The River." From tabletops to bar-top she continues to mesmerize the audience with performance art. The lady is in perpetual movement as she does each number. An emotion filled "I Will Always Love You".  The evening draws to a close. I ask Lilli for her favorite lyric line---Michael Jacksons "We Are The World". The music wasn't the BLUES or JAZZ but she and the band provided 100% entertainment. A night of fun for me and my 'migos from East L.A.

During cocktail hour, Jessi Campo performed with Alex D. She has a haunting voice, he plays a notable tenor sax. Unfortunately they play with tracks due to budget constraints. They're musical skill are evident but I have no knowledge of recorded music so I am not qualified to review it.
My friends are in town tonight and tomorrow---who knows!

A short note: The reason I write this is because I love music and words. I do not book acts. I do not promote acts. I do not accept invitations to review artists. I go to venues of my own choice. When and where is not influenced by anything other than who I would like to hear that night or day. If I don't like what I hear, I won't write about it. When I like it I let you all know. I never mention a name without asking permission. "Pardon me, Miss. Would you like to dance?"

"They Call It Stormy Monday" (...but Allen Kanovsky calls it anything he wants, whenever he wants!)

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 10/02/13

...but if you can make it to Tuesday, it ain't bad at all. Especially if you're at Boston's on the Beach in Delray Beach. More specifically if you're there for the Musicians Exchange Reunion in honor of Don Cohen. BLUES stars on stage, BLUES stars in the audience and dedicated BLUESophiles there to listen. It wasn't a surprise to see so many BLUES kind of folks out on a Tuesday night in support of a worthy cause. They always seem to "Come Together" when necessary. O.K. I'll start with the music, in order of appearance. First on stage were the "AllNighters". Steve Weinstein(guitar/vocals), Donny La Stella(drums), T-bird Tordanico(guitar), Ray?(bass) and Motel Mel(keys).

Straight ahead boogie and BLUES. Lots of clappin', tappin' fun, and dancing. Running through the play list---"I'm Ready", "Sugar Sweet", albert Kings "Weeping and Bending", "Honey Hush", "It's my Soul", "I Tell At Home" and an original composition of Rays', "Avenue D." The crowd is growing and I see Drew Preston, Rockin' Jake, Piano Bob, Otis Cadillac, Betty Rosenfeld, Blues Bobby and wife, Dave(Cat in the hat) with Lonnie, Jimmy Belize with new gal pal Kathy, Tania Blues, Bobby Nathan, Enid the photog and again lots of folks I know to shake hands with or hug but don't or can't remember their names. I dance with a couple of "young thangs", Cindy Galiardo--she has some moves---and Linley Schatzman---way toooooo young and pretty. Remembering Tania in short, black and tight I had asked her to dance as well. She was too busy taping and recording the show. I almost cried. Almost. Next up was  "Magic Bus"--Dan Newman, Joe Rizzo(drums) Russ and I think I spied Kenny Burkhart at the keyboard. A trip from way back until just yesterday---"Love That Dirty Water" to the Beatles "Come Together" to the Beach Boys "Having Fun in the California Sun" and we were all having fun in the Del Ray moonlight. The bands had a 20 minute time limit so the play lists were short. Capt. Reese is up with Motel Mel(keys), Joel DeSilva(guitar) and Johnny Mandell(guitar). They say they are called the Bluesberry Jazz Jam. Hey, Ray,---Charles, that is. "Tell Me What I Say"---oh baby--the joint is rockin'. "Going Back to Memphis is Capt. Reese's song and he makes the most of it. Now they remind me how hungry I am when they play "Chicken, Gravy and Biscuits" I ask for a menu and my server, Brittany complies. I'm eating, they're playing "I Don't Need No Doctor". Am I consuming too many carbs? The rhythm is 'shuffle' when they do "Going To Reap What What You Sow".
Pay Attention---On stage, Dave Shelly, 'One Night Stan' Waldman, Nicole Yarling, John Yarling, Ken Burkhart, Pat Ward--the rafters are coming loose, gals are shaking their you know whats and I am kicked back, lushed, stuffed and having one heck of a good time. Suddenly, my view of the stage is cut off by a guy standing between me and the band. I tap the guy on the shoulder--he turns around---"Albert, Albert Kuh stig lee uh", I say. "Kuh steel ya, you schmuck" is his reply. Where in the hell did he learn to speak Yiddish.?

"You Say Ta Mah Toe and I Say Ta May Toe". Albert!!! Just go ahead and play some BLUES and make me happy. He does do that. Dave is still on stage with Nicole and are tearing the joint up taking turns on vocal & instrumental solos. Never again will "Tuesday's just as bad" apply.

The band does a New Orleans party song dating back to the 50's that has everybody on the floor, even a guy wearing both a belt and suspenders. Reminded me of my visits to the Cajun country. Jerry does his thing when he and Albert do "Tell Me Why". Now everybody is on stage with Castiglia (say Kuh Steel Ya) to play "Bad Avenue". All you need to do is hear this one and you'll know why I love the BLUES. Famous Frank sings "I've Had My Fun. The band does the called for 'one more with a standard BLUES that has the chord changes of "Let The Good Times Roll" with everyone just jammin'.

Thanks to all the musicians who played. If I didn't mention your name, it is entirely on me. So, when you see me next time, remind me and I'll buy you a drink. Or in the words of the late 'blue' comedian, B.S. Pully, 'vice-versa'
A short note about my buddy, Jimmy Belize. Jimmy is a recovering--you name it--and is known for being a deep thinker. Some of his thoughts*****(concerning Tina at the bar) "Tina serves the best Coca-Cola in town"****(concerning Jackson Hole, Wyoming) "Don't mess with a mans hat, horse or girl friend, in that order. If you get past the first two, don't worry about #3"

More from this misguided Senior plus Citizen later today

The JBF monthly ezine gives our readers previews of local and touring artists with upcoming performances throughout Florida. Along with the ezine, the JBF website offers comprehensive listings of live jazz and blues music in clubs, concerts and festivals across the state. This month's features are:

  • Dr. John & the Nite Trippers
  • Gregory Porter
  • Karrin Allyson
  • Kenny Barron's Platinum Band

  • Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band
  • Robert Randolph and the Family Band
  • Samantha Fish
  • South Florida Blues All Stars - Joey Gilmore Band, Albert Castiglia, Joel DaSilva, Josh Rowand, Dave Shelley
  • Vince Mendoza
The main Jazz & Blues website - http://www.JazzBluesFlorida.com - contains multiple facets and areas of interest for our visitors. Here is a helpful guide to the site and what JBF is and is not:

The home page of our website identifies the JBF logo and has an option to join our mailing list. Unlike other entities, Jazz & Blues Florida only sends music news to you based on your preferences for type of music interest, region of the state, and your choice of email frequency.

Banners at top, bottom and the right side of all website pages are paid promotional advertisements by our clients from and in the music scene. The tabs below the JBF logo take you to other areas of the site including our very popular jazz and blues news blog which is visited by over 16,000 readers/month and has a life-time readership of over 290,000. The JBF Blog contains both paid promotional information on upcoming events around the state as well as coverage of various live music performances and other articles of interest. We will be reporting our new readership numbers in the coming week.

"Music Listings" provides hundreds of current and upcoming listings for clubs, concerts and festivals throughout the state of Florida, and is organized by region. JBF artist and venue clients are highlighted, linked, and mapped. Free listings are available by following the submission guidelines (see top of each region page).

JBF has an extensive years-long and continually updated library of photos and videos from music events in the jazz and blues world of Florida. Several places to view these are our Facebook page , our JBF YouTube channel , and our Blog. We post mostly short video clips of live performances to share what we are experiencing - and in many instances, to give you time to make it there for the show! We are not claiming to be professional videographers - but we DO confess to being genuine music lovers!

Browse the JBF site for other items of interest such as our collection of recommended links including live-streaming radio and web programming, educational resources and state-wide jazz and blues society information.

What Jazz & Blues Florida is NOT: We regularly receive numerous requests for types of services - many expecting free services - that are not a part of who we are and what we offer to our clients and/or readers. We are not a booking agency! However, our Music Listings are available for viewing by artists looking to book gigs as well as by all the music lovers out there looking for live music! Help yourself! If you are an artist and wish to be included in the Listings as one of the red highlighted/linked & mapped entries, you may contact us regarding the ultra-affordable "Premium Listing" service that we offer to have all your Florida gigs included in that manner. As any business must operate, our time and efforts must be directed towards those that support us - our clients - and we in turn offer 110% support in return. We simply do not have the time to spend offering free services to help artists, venues, or other music-related businesses when we have clients who deserve our time and efforts.

There are many services we can offer a potential client that we will be more than happy to discuss with you via email or phone. Our rates are more than affordable for the exposure you receive from our large data base of subscribers and contacts. No other similar entity can come close to our reasonable rates for the return you will receive in quality and depth of promotion. Please contact us if this interests you! This being said, we are not locked into a concrete format forever, and are constantly looking for alternatives to improve the music scene we involve ourselves in.

We also pride ourselves on being honest and straight-forward in our dealings, and the results of this is reflected in feedback we receive from our clients and readers (www.JazzBluesFlorida.com/Feedback). We report real, substantiated numbers (www.JazzBluesFlorida.com/reports) and are willing to provide any information requested that does not violate the trust put in us by our clients or readers.

We welcome new readers as well as advertisers to the Jazz & Blues Florida family. We strive to support and promote real music, by real people, in real places. We hope to see you out there in the music scene!

Thanks!
