Coming Soon to Tampa Jazz Club: James Suggs in a Tribute to Louis Armstrong

Tampa Jazz Club and HCC/Ybor Performing Arts Series Present:
 James Suggs
In a Tribute to:
Louis Armstrong

It's a celebration of a true American original, LOUIS ARMSTRONG, at the next Tampa Jazz Club concert, part of the HCC/Ybor City Visual & Performing Arts Series. The concert will take place in the Mainstage Theatre in the Performing Arts Center at HCC/Ybor on April 19, 2015 at 3:00 PM.

The most influential figure in setting the course for jazz, 'Satchmo' was loved by fans throughout the world for decades. For this occasion, trumpeter JAMES SUGGS will lead a stellar 6-piece band, and the afternoon will feature a special appearance by Louis Armstrong's daughter, SHARON PRESTON-FOLTA.

A remarkable trumpeter who has recently moved to the Bay Area, James Suggs fell under Armstrong's spell as a youngster. He transcribed the 1928 classic 'Weather Bird' when he was just 14 and says that Armstrong was 'always my biggest inspiration.' His extensive experience has included performances in big bands and Latin groups through the U.S. and Europe, and most recently 8 years in Buenos Aires before relocating to Florida. The Palladium's Paul Wilborn last year called James Suggs "our new favorite trumpet player," and this  Tampa Jazz Club concert will mark his Tampa debut as leader of his own group.

And what a band! Suggs is joined by his frequent collaborators and top Bay Area players - trombonist and singer MARIUS DICPETRIS, guitarist NATE NAJAR, and bassist JOHN LAMB. And from Central Florida, two renowned and widely-recorded artists, clarinetist TERRY MYERS, and drummer ED METZ, JR. This will be a swinging afternoon of great traditional jazz!

SHARON PRESTON-FOLTA is the daughter of Louis Armstrong, who in 2012 published "Little Satchmo: Living in the Shadow of My Father, Louis Daniel Armstrong," the first time she had told her story publicly. She is a media sales executive and chef, and will make a special appearance at this Armstrong tribute, to meet audience members and sign copies of her memoir.
