"From The Bottom Of My Heart....(Just how deep is that cold abyss, Allen Kanovsky?)

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 9/30/13

...I Apologize." It's a lyric from back in the day===I think Johnny Hartman. The reason I open with that tag line is because that is what I have to say. The trip to New Smyrna Beach JAZZ Festival was aborted when I ran into the fatigue wall 200 miles short of my destination. I guess Father Time is catching up to me and my schedule. The apology is extended to all the talented musicians I failed to hear and review yesterday. Returning home I made a brief stop at Gino's in Boca for a little sustenance & strength(Italian Ice).Arriving home, I crashed and slept for eight hours, awoke, had some soup and lay down again and slept another 8. I congratulate my pillow for standing up to the onslaught. Will try to make up for it tonight----Jackie(the flight attendant) is back in town===

A short note: The reason I write this is because I love music and words. I do not book acts. I do not promote acts. I do not accept invitations to review artists. I go to venues of my own choice. When and where is not influenced by anything other than who I would like to hear that night or day. If I don't like what I hear, I won't write about it. When I like it I let you all know. I never mention a name without asking permission. "Pardon me, Miss. Would you like to dance?"

R.I.P. Billy Mure. Florida guitar legend lays down his guitar after 97 years.

Billy Mure & Debbi Brown Murphy
With much sadness, we found out this morning of the passing of Billy Mure - a shining diamond that played among us, and for us, here in Florida. I spoke with Debbie Brown Murphy, his fiancĂ©e, and she related that he passed peacefully this past Wednesday in the care of  Hospice with her at his side.  Billy was playing his regular Sunday gig at Squid Lips in Sebastian Florida up to just four weeks ago. She related that when he came home from that gig and put his guitar down, he did not pick it up again, as he did daily for their whole time together. Even being named a "Guitar Legend" by Guitar Player Magazine never convinced him he didn't need to practice and learn each and every day into his 97th year. Yes, SUPERSONIC to the end...

The October edition of Jazz & Blues Florida has been dedicated to his memory.

I hope you had a chance to see his smile and hear his music. I have found some links that will give a glimpse of this amazing person:

...who prefer wines imported from France. Napa Valley. California is fine with me. Others say the only real BLUES come from the riversides of the Mississippi. The shores of the Seine in Paris ain't bad either. It has turned out some pretty good BLUES men including the exceptional Nico Wayne Toussaint(harp) and new to the U.S., guitarist Michel Foizon. They were the feature last night at The Fish House in Kendall. The room was crowded with JAZZ & BLUES afficianados including birthday girl Diane Young who drove down from Palm Beach. The trio of ladies, Georgine, Carmela, Bernadette I met at Ave D last week were there with their pal Jerry. My favorite dance couple, Martine & Jacque joined Bill R, Denise, Capt Bob, Jo-jo  and I at a close up table. Nicco is in town to compete at Rosey Baby's on Sunday for a chance at the finals for the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. While here with Michel, they are working in studio on a new CD. The duo ran through the litany of BLUES, old, new and some original
Michel Foizon & Nico Wayne Toussaint
compositions. Little Mike, Rockin'Jake, Mitch Goldstein, Redbeans Blaize amongst others are all talented harp players. There is just a little something more about Nicco. His knowledge of the BLUES, past and present is "nonpareil." It was at The Fish House that Flo & I heard him for the first time a few years ago. If I didn't stand in the way, I think Flo would have kidnapped the guy. Yesterday was the first anniversary of Flo's passing. Nicco remembers her well and dedicated the evenings performance to her. A very gracious act. They opened with "Ain't That Loving", and then ran through a litany of BLUES, past and present.  Michel was allowed to show off on a slow shuffle called "Don't You Know That I love You".  Bill requested a Junior Wells tune and Nicco responded with "Come On In This House". Martine & Jacques got up to dance to "Talk To Me" and "Are You Ready For Me".
Michel takes the lead on a couple of tunes and shows talented BLUES chops. A friend of Martine's, marathon runner, Evelyn Behr joins us to enjoy the music. From his new CD, Nicco does his original composition "Lonely Number". Jeff gets up on harp to do a song with Nicco and does "real good". Earlier. Friday, at the studio session they recorded "St. James Infirmary" with some interesting additional lyric lines. Nicco played it for us as well. Nicco and Little Mike were both inspired by James Cotton. NWT did "Midnight" in tribute. They follow with another original, "How Long To Heal" an award winning tune. The tempo is slow and haunting. Couples get up to dance---grind would be the more appropriate description of what they did. It would take until the day after tomorrow to list all the BLUES songs the duo played so I'll conclude with Nicco doing an Edith Piaf ballad that reincarnated that talented woman. He could not end the program with out Angela's favorite, "Dealing With the Devil".

Tonight Nicco at the Titanic. I am heading up to The New Smyrna Beach JAZZ Festival. Great program. Maybe see YOU there.

Once upon a time...(...and what a time it was!, right Allen Kanovsky?)

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 9/27/13

...in the "Land Of Oobladee". No, it was long before that opus was written. It was 1939. I was 6 months shy of my 8th birthday. A cool July night. I was wrapped in a blanket and seated in the rumble seat of a car. The car was located in the parking lot of the Glen Island Casino. My sister. Florence, (Sissy to me) was inside, dancing with her boyfriend a drummer by the name of Larry.

I could hear the music. Sure, I had heard 'swing' before on the radio. but I never heard it 'live'. My feet were tappin' and I was shaking my shoulders. I didn't know it but I was doing the "Lindy". How can I remember that night, when I can't remember where I put my glasses? I'll ask you. Do you remember the night when you fell in love for the first time? I was lost forever in the arms of "live music." The band that night was Glenn Miller and they did play "In the Mood".  My sister married the drummer when he became the banquet manager of the Hotel Astor. Last night this memory came to life when I went to Ye Olde Falcon Pub to listen to the Mike Norris Big Band. (Every Thursday 8-10). Really a big band. Piano, drums. bass and guitar. 5 piece sax section(2 tenors, 2altos, baritone), 3 trombones and 4 trumpets. They are all worthy of being named because of the way the performed complex charts to perfection. The trumpets--Ryan Chapman, John Shev, Mark Orduay and Stefan Klein Sr. Trombones--Russell Freelan, Tom Lacey and Jim McGonigal. Sax section--Carlos Pinera(bari), Scott Austin and Carlos Perez(altos) and Edgar Rubio & Terry Sturm(tenors). The rhythm section had Joshua Cassette(piano) and far away the youngest member, Ranses Colon(bass), Aaron Stang(guitar) and the bandleader Mike Norris on drums.
What can I say except "They swing". My only regret was that I didn't bring a dancing partner.

They were doing a Basie chart of "Shiny Stockings" when I walked in. Not the simplest but the most interesting of the Basie charts for that song. They did an Ellington tune and then a complex version of the overture to "West Side Story". During the break I spoke with a young man named Mark Cruz. The reason I talked with him was I recognized the accent and shared his enthusiasm for the music we just heard. With Mark was his "good" friend Marla who shared our feelings about the music. The 2d set was short, made up mainly of a tune titled "Channel 1 Suite". If you ever want to see if a band can play, challenge them to 'sight read' that one. Had a great time, listening to a very good band and will have to do it again. I'll remember to bring a partner to swing with.
It's early enough to go to BJB's on 'toity-toid'. The Sound of Vision with guest vocalist Liz Sharpe. Dy-no-mite! When I arrive they are doing an original titled "For the Love of You". Scott Korman plays tenor, EWI and his tugging at my heart strings with a super mellow solo.

The band, Valerio Cantante(left hand doing bass lines, right hand doing what right hands do) and Orlando Machado(drums), swing one which I don't recognize outside of the rhythm. Liz takes the stage to do a very unusual "It Don't Mean A Thing". She does it to a slow rhythmed funk beat. Wow! They do "In the Moonlight" giving Orlando a shot at 'showing off', and he does. They invite a young vocalist, Ali Kringel, to the stage. She opts to do "At Last" and does not imitate anybody else. Nice job. Liz returns and they jump the s--t out of "Going To Kansas City".

Time to say goodnight to all and it's too late for Tracy. Oh well, there's always tomorrow. Special note: Tonight, Nico Wayne Toussaint at The Fish House n Kendall. If you love BLUES harp, you will be there. Nico was one of Flo's favorites. It is so appropriate that he will appear at The Fish House where it was we first heard him.

Today is the anniversary of Flo's passing. Rest Gently in the Lord's Arms my love.
