Monty Alexander is a Jamaican-born pianist whose career bridges the foundations of modern Caribbean music and the highest levels of international jazz. Raised in Kingston, he was already performing professionally as a teenager in the late 1950s, working in the island’s first recording studios at a time when Jamaican popular music was still taking shape. Alexander took part in early sessions that helped define ska, a style that later fed directly into rocksteady and reggae as Jamaican music evolved in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Those formative years remain an essential part of his musical voice, where Caribbean rhythm, melody, and phrasing sit naturally alongside swing and the blues.

After relocating to the United States, Alexander quickly became part of the American jazz mainstream, earning respect for a piano style that combines deep swing, blues feeling, virtuosic technique, and rhythmic authority. His work connected him with many of the most important figures in jazz history, including Duke Ellington, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson, Wes Montgomery, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Sonny Rollins. Over the decades, Alexander has built a wide-ranging discography as a leader and collaborator, consistently integrating Jamaican musical traditions with straight-ahead jazz, modern harmony, and improvisational freedom.

Today, Monty Alexander is recognized worldwide as a master pianist and cultural connector, presenting performances that honor both his Caribbean roots and the jazz tradition. His concerts reflect a lifetime of musical exploration shaped by early innovation, global influence, and enduring artistic purpose.
