SMG welcomes Grammy Award-winning, Latin jazz musician Poncho
Sanchez, as he performs at the Ritz Theatre September 5th at
8 PM.
For more than
three decades as both a leader and a sideman, conguero Poncho Sanchez has
stirred up a fiery stew of straight-ahead jazz, gritty soul music, and
infectious melodies and rhythms from a variety of Latin American and South
American sources.
He’s produced 19 albums, including his first album Salsa
Picante (1980); Latin Soul which garnered a Grammy
Award for Best Latin Jazz Album in 2000; his 2005 CD entitled: Do It!,
which features the iconic band Tower of Power on two tracks, as well as South
African trumpeter Hugh Masekela; and Live in Hollywood (2012).
Poncho Sanchez is a self-taught musician playing
the flute, drums and timbales; and finally settled on the conga’s while in high
school by locking himself in his mother’s garage, mimicking the percussion
sounds he heard while listening to Cal Tjader records. After a chance meeting
with Tjader in 1975, Sanchez landed a permanent position with his band, which
was the start of his professional music career.
Other notable influences on Sanchez’s music include: congo
drummer and composer Chano Pozo, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane,
Miles Davis, Mongo Santamaria, Wilson Pickett and James Brown.
The Ritz Theatre has additional jazz shows on the horizon
with the September edition of the Jazz Discovery Series, which will feature
Jacksonville-native Jamison Ross and the John Lumpkin Trio;
Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and
former front man for Booker T & the MG’s—Booker T. Jones; and one of
the world’s foremost pianist and composers Randy Weston’s African
Rhythms.
