Twenty-Fourth Season!
Coral Gables Congregational Church
Community Arts Program
2009 Summer Concert Series

MIAMI, FL - The Coral Gables Congregational Church (CGCC) Community Arts Program presents its 2009 Summer Concert Series, June 4 through August 13. Entering its 24th season, this Series offers extraordinary concert opportunities-from classical to the American art form of jazz-during the down time of many South Florida arts organizations.

The CGCC Community Arts Program Summer Concert Series is not your run-of-the-mill series. It provides South Florida with the world’s greatest artists from the world’s greatest venues, which typically seat 3,000+. The advantage to South Floridians attending the CGCC Community Arts Program Summer Concert Series is this: the opportunity to hear and to see top-ranked artists within an intimate setting. All concerts are held within the 450-seat Spanish-revival-style architecture of the Coral Gables Congregational Church, listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The result is engaging visual and aural experiences that uplift individuals’ concert enjoyment, at a reasonable ticket price ($25-$40 when purchased in advance).

The CGCC Community Arts Program 2009 Summer Concert Series roster includes the following artists:

June 4
Arturo O’Farrill Afro-Latin Jazz Sextet

The 2009 Summer Concert Series opens with an outstanding sextet of players from the Arturo O’Farrill Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. A prominent figure of the Afro-Cuban jazz movement, Arturo preserves much of the music made famous by his father, Chico O’Farrill. As a pianist/composer, Arturo is an acclaimed winner of the Latin Jazz USA Outstanding Achievement Award and comes by way of an impressive résumé of collaborations with a wide spectrum of artists: Dizzy Gillespie; Steve Turre; Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte, to name a few. In 2002, Arturo created the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra for Jazz at Lincoln Center. He continues to champion the demanding body of substantial music in the genre of Latin and Afro-Cuban Jazz. This concert will present a combination of piano, trumpet, sax, bass, drums and percussion that will move concert goers, literally, into an exhilarating and unforgettable evening!

June 18
Anne Akiko Meyers
Impassioned performances, compelling music making and mastery of a broad and varied selection of music have made Anne Akiko Meyers one of today's most sought-after violinists. She burst into national prominence at age 11 when she twice performed on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. By the time her debut disc of the Barber and Bruch violin concertos was released at age 18, she was recognized as one of the stars of her generation. Anne’s extensive discography can be found on the Avie, BMG/Sony, Camerata, Hyperion, Naxos, RCA Victor Red Seal and RPO labels. In January of 2009, she released her highly-anticipated new album, Smile, for Koch Records. Hear Anne Akiko Meyers with pianist Reiko Uchida in an enchanting evening. Listeners will surely smile with music of Beethoven, Debussy, Arvo Pärt, Alfred Schnittke, Vernon Duke, George Gershwin and other surprises!

July 2
Tony DeSare
Shortly after moving to New York City in 1999, singer, pianist and songwriter Tony DeSare was cast as the star of the long running Off-Broadway musical, Our Sinatra, in which he was praised by Variety for his “dapper charm.” Since that time, Tony has earned critical acclaim for his recent performances at the legendary jazz club Birdland, the elegant Café Carlyle, and Jazz at Lincoln Center. On a 2009 Summer Concert Series special holiday concert engagement, Tony DeSare is joined with drums and jazz bass for an exceptional evening of American jazz standards.

July 16
Sharon Isbin
Acclaimed for her extraordinary lyricism, technique and versatility, GRAMMY Award winner Sharon Isbin has been hailed as "the pre-eminent guitarist of our time." Winner of the Madrid, Toronto, and Munich Competitions, and Guitar Player’s "Best Classical Guitarist" award, Ms. Isbin made history as the first classical guitarist to receive a GRAMMY in 28 years, for her Dreams of a World album. She received a 2005 Latin GRAMMY nomination for “Best Classical Album” and a 2006 GLAAD Award nomination as “Outstanding Music Artist” for her Billboard Top 10 Classical disc with the New York Philharmonic. Most recently, she is featured on Howard Shore’s 2008 GRAMMY-nominated soundtrack CD for The Departed. This 2009 Summer Concert event with Sharon Isbin is an intimate evening of music by Leo Brouwer, Granados, Tárrega, and Albéniz, among others. A special highlight will be John Duarte’s hauntingly beautiful Joan Baez Suite, Op. 144.

July 30
Eldar Djangirov Trio
Pianist Eldar Djangirov has accomplished something that the vast majority of jazz artists, pianists or otherwise, will never accomplish: He landed a contract with a major label and received a GRAMMY nomination before he could have a drink. In 2001, Eldar took top prize in the jazz piano competition of the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. The following year, he won first place in the Peter Nero Piano Competition. At 22, Eldar has recorded five albums. Three are with Sony Classical, including the 2008 GRAMMY-nominated album for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, Re-Imagination. The jazz phenomenon, known as Eldar, appears on the 2009 Summer Concert Series with the Eldar Djangirov Trio. It’ll be amazing, guaranteed!

August 13
Delfeayo Marsalis
Master trombonist and member of the famed Marsalis family, Delfeayo Marsalis began playing at age 13 and produced his first recording at 17. He has since produced over 75 major-label recordings that include Harry Connick, Jr.; Marcus Roberts; Spike Lee; father, Ellis Marsalis; and brothers, Branford and Wynton Marsalis. In 2009 Delfeayo releases his new album entitled Sweet Thunder, an Ellington suite based upon the literary brilliance of William Shakespeare. In an over-the-top Evening with Delfeayo Marsalis, Delfeayo appears with his quintet of trombone, piano, saxophone, bass and drums. This is the final dynamic and compelling 2009 Summer Concert Series event, not to be missed!
