Now Accepting Applications From Student Big Bands, Combos, Vocal Ensembles, Composers, Individual Musicians

Next Generation Festival Jazz Competition Open To Middle School, High School, Conglomerate School, And College Level Musicians And Vocalists

Country's Top Young Players Compete For Performance Opportunities
At 53rd Annual Monterey Jazz Festival, September 17 - 19, 2010

Next Generation Festival Includes Free Concerts, Clinics, Workshops,
And Jazz Competition, April 9 - 11, 2010 In Historic Downtown Monterey

October 27, 2009; Monterey, California; The Monterey Jazz Festival, a leader in jazz education since its inception in 1958, is pleased to announce the 6th Annual Next Generation Festival, featuring the nation’s most talented middle school, high school, conglomerate school, and college jazz musicians and vocalists. The Next Generation Festival will take place in historic downtown Monterey from April 9 - 11, 2010.

Now in its 6th successful year in downtown Monterey, the Next Generation Festival evolved from MJF's "California High School Jazz Competition" which started in 1971 and was presented at the Monterey County Fairgrounds for 35 of its 40-year run. Now named the Next Generation Festival, the weekend salute to the future of jazz has expanded to include middle school, conglomerate school, and college level musicians and vocalists.

The Next Generation Festival Jazz Competition is now accepting applications from middle school, high school, and college big bands; from high school and college level conglomerate bands; and from high school combos and vocal jazz ensembles through January 22, 2010. Application forms may be downloaded at the Monterey Jazz Festival’s website, www.montereyjazzfestival.org. The application process is free of charge, as is participation in the prestigious event.

A three-year grant from the Surdna Foundation supports the Next Generation Festival and the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra's international tours. The Surdna Foundation’s Arts Program is national in scope and supports the artistic advancement of teens, ages 12 - 18.

Next Generation Festival finalists are selected through recorded auditions reviewed and ranked by faculty from the Berklee College of Music, and will include twelve big bands, six combos, and eight vocal ensembles in the High School Division. Six college-level big bands and six college vocal ensembles will also be selected, in addition to six conglomerate and six middle school big bands.

New for 2010 is the Open Combo Division for college and conglomerate high school ensembles. Six finalist combos will be selected to participate in this newest division. In addition, specially-invited groups will also perform. In 2009, over fifty groups from across the United States as well as international groups from the U.K. and Japan attended the Next Generation Festival.

The high school, conglomerate school, and college divisions of the Next Generation Festival Jazz Competition are open to superior rated big bands, combos, and vocal ensembles. The top big bands, combo, and vocal ensemble will win cash awards and be invited to perform at the 53rd Annual Monterey Jazz Festival, September 17 - 19, 2010.

Auditions will also be held for chairs in the Monterey Jazz Festival’s Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, which is slated to tour at jazz venues and festivals throughout North America, as well as being featured on the Monterey Jazz Festival's Sunday afternoon Arena/Lyons Stage.

The event also includes a big band composition competition, open to high school composers, with the winning piece to be debuted at the 53rd Annual Monterey Jazz Festival by the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra. Judged by college faculty from leading music schools across the country, the winning composer will receive the Gerald Wilson Award and a cash prize, with the winning composition to be performed by the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra at the 53rd Annual Monterey Jazz Festival, September 19, 2010, on the Jimmy Lyons Stage in the Arena before a crowd of thousands.

“Plans are well underway for making our 6th annual Next Generation Festival another exciting MJF event,” said Dr. Rob Klevan, Education Director for the Monterey Jazz Festival. “April 9 - 11, 2010, is a special weekend as it marks the 40th anniversary for the Monterey Jazz Festival’s High School Competition, but for anyone who has ever attended the Next Generation Festival, it’s clear that our emphasis is on presenting a ‘festival’ as the very best of the next generation of jazz musicians, from middle school to college, gather in Monterey to perform, listen, learn, and enjoy this great American music, jazz. For students, teachers, and jazz fans alike, the celebratory atmosphere and festive vibe at the Next Generation Festival is what makes this event so fun and special.”

All Next Generation Festival events and activities -- from Friday night's Kick-Off Concert through Saturday and Sunday's Next Generation Festival Jazz Competition -- are open to the public, free of charge. The Festival will also conduct clinics, workshops, jam sessions, and auditions in the heart of historic Monterey, with music to be performed at the Monterey Conference Center, the host Portola Plaza Hotel, Fisherman’s Wharf, Cannery Row, and a downtown jazz club.

Interested schools and students should visit www.montereyjazzfestival.org for instructions on how to apply to the Next Generation Festival. Applications with an audition tape/CD should be mailed to: Next Generation Festival, c/o Dr. Rob Klevan, Jazz Education Director, 9699 Blue Larkspur Lane, Suite 204, Monterey, CA, 93940.

Inspirational Jazz Documentary "Chops" Drums up Excitement for Florida Jazz Programs

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Virgil Films & Entertainment announces the innovative release of the acclaimed documentary, CHOPS, directed by Bruce Broder, which follows T.J., Owen and other high school jazz students from around the country as they prepare for and perform in Jazz at Lincoln Center's Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival. In partnership with B-Side Entertainment and Jazz at Lincoln Center, the film is being offered nationwide as a resource to bring awareness to the importance of arts education, as a fundraising tool for school arts and music programs and as an educational platform for teachers. CHOPS is currently screening at schools and theaters and available on DVD. A special educational edition complete with lesson plans will be made available later in the year.

CHOPS made its debut at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival and garnered huge accolades for its entertaining storytelling and inspirational message. At film festivals around the country it won numerous awards, including the International Documentary Association's Alan Ett Music Documentary Award, several Audience Favorite Awards and two Grand Prizes.

Featuring the music of Duke Ellington, arguably America's greatest composer, the documentary profiles the relentless dedication and teamwork of young aspiring jazz musicians and their unwavering love of music. As they travel to New York City to compete in what has been called the “Superbowl of high school jazz band competitions," this group--made up of kids from all walks of life--makes the most of their differences and comes to embrace the commitment it takes to be the best. They work together, set goals together and push each other to realize a dream.

In an effort to bolster enthusiasm for arts and music programs in schools, Virgil and B-Side, in association with Jazz at Lincoln Center, have launched a nationwide screening program. Educators are encouraged to book their own screenings of CHOPS in their school as a way to fundraise for arts education programs. As a part of this unique program, screening hosts may charge whatever admission they like and keep 100% of the proceeds.

“I am convinced that by watching this film [CHOPS]...my students will gain a new level of excitement and motivation to improve individually and as an ensemble," said Dr. Bill Pace, Band Director, Xavier High School, New York City.

CHOPS has already screened at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. as a part of the celebrations of Jazz Appreciation Month and Duke Ellington's 110th birthday. Virgil and B-Side will continue sharing the film at jazz festivals, community theaters, and musical instrument and sheet music retailers across the country

Wynton Marsalis, Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, said of CHOPS, “This film is so well made, a labor of love..." while Andre Cole of BET wrote, “I really think younger audiences need to see this movie to appreciate jazz." Andrea Mineo of CNN raved about the film, saying it “...made me laugh, made me tear up, made me feel great. It was fantastic."

“CHOPS fits into that category of film that gets me excited," added Joe Amodei, President of Virgil Films & Entertainment. “When we can release a product that entertains and inspires at the same time, we have reached our goal. This film achieves both in a very big way."

CHOPS is a Bruce Broder film, in association with Winnercomm, Inc. with thanks to Jazz at Lincoln Center. The executive producer is Tim Cremin and the producers are Chip Rives, Joe Carmody, and Warren Skeels. The editor is Jake Pushinsky.

John Clayton & Jeff Hamilton interviewed by Bill Meredith of Jazz & Blues Florida

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Rhythm is their business
John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton keep the heart of the big band beating.

October 23, 2009
by Bill Meredith

www.myspace.com/JazzBluesFlorida

For 25 years, bassist John Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton have formed the back line of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Founded in 1985 and co-led by Clayton's saxophone-playing brother Jeff Clayton, the big band has recorded a handful of stellar CDs and served as the in-residence ensemble for the Hollywood Bowl Jazz Series from 1999 to 2001.

Hamilton, 56, also leads his own self-titled trio. His session drum savvy has earned him Grammy Awards for his work with Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Benny Carter, Diana Krall and Queen Latifah (for 2007's Trav'lin' Light). Hamilton's trio also released a new CD titled Symbiosis for the Capri label.

Clayton, 57, is an esteemed bass man and educator; co-leads The Clayton Brothers with Jeff Clayton; and is often the arranger of choice for producers like Quincy Jones and Tommy LiPuma. He and Hamilton both appear on guitarist Graham Dechter's new CD, Right on Time, also released on Capri.

The ace rhythm section plays at the University of Miami on Oct. 29 with UM's Frost School of Music dean, pianist Shelly Berg, plus other faculty members. On Oct. 30, Clayton and Hamilton play with the Frost Concert Jazz Band and the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra to celebrate the institute's relocation to UM. Both men recently talked about the forthcoming experience, as well as looked back on their remarkable careers.

After you guys played together with pianist Monty Alexander (1975-1977), you both ended up with big bands (Hamilton with Woody Herman; Clayton with Count Basie). Was that foreshadowing?

JC: If so, it was an unconscious move. But Jeff and I had talked about how fun it would be to put together a big band since we studied together at Indiana University, when we also played together in a version of the Tommy Dorsey Big Band.

JH: John and I have had a common love for big bands, like the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra and Duke Ellington's bands, ever since college. After playing with Monty and Basie, John moved to Holland for a few years, and I ended up in Los Angeles. But John was writing more while he was in Holland, so we got more serious about forming a big band once he moved to L.A.

What qualities did you find in one another that made you want to undergo the financial perils of a big band together?

JC: Jeff is one of my favorite drummers, and definitely my favorite big-band drummer. And with us, it all comes back to those two words — the music.

JH: Having listened to Oscar Peterson records with Ray Brown on bass, I always heard similar great qualities in John's playing, and even more so after he and Ray became associated with each other. And John's writing has always been creative and swinging, and very much in sync with my style of playing.

Have either of you worked with pianist and Frost School dean Shelly Berg?

JH: I did, when he was working in California [as a professor and Chair of Jazz Studies at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California, 1991-2007], and I enjoyed his energy very much. He's become a dear friend.

JC: I've played with Shelly many times. He's one of my favorite pianists to play with.

What kind of material will you be playing?

JH: At this point, I honestly don't know! The first night will be with Shelly and the faculty, and the second is likely to be some of John's charts. We only have a two-hour rehearsal before the orchestra show the second night, so we'll be looking at some charts on stage. I'll wear my reading glasses.

JC: I've talked to Shelly about this. We'll certainly do some things from my book, including some of Jeff's favorites, like my arrangement of "Back Home in Indiana" [composed by James F. Hanley and Ballard MacDonald, and recorded by the likes of Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole]. Other material will be designed to showcase the students, and make sure they have fun.

What does it take to keep a big band together during a 21st-century recession?

JC: At this point, it really is all about familial commitment. We had a rehearsal last week, and while we took care of business, it also involved a lot of smiles, laughs and camaraderie.

JH: For the orchestra at Lincoln Center, it's great financial support, something we also had at the Hollywood Bowl. But for us now, it's a feeling of family. That, and the Duke Ellington ideal of the band members composing the material — so that only that band sounds like it knows how to play the stuff correctly!

John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton perform with Shelly Berg and Frost School of Music faculty 8 pm Thursday, Oct. 29, at Gusman Concert Hall at the University of Miami, 1314 Miller Drive. Clayton and Hamilton will perform with the Henry Mancini Orchestra and Frost Concert Jazz Band 8 pm Friday, Oct. 30, also at Gusman. Tickets cost $25-$75. Miami Herald Article Previews TigerTail's Season Opener Jazz Drummer

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Dutch drummer can't help but play
BY BOB WEINBERG

Special to The Miami Herald

Han Bennink was feeling frisky. Onstage with pianist Misha Mengelberg and saxophonist Kenny Millions at the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center in 2007, the legendary Dutch jazz drummer displayed the mischievous wit and childlike exuberance for which he's long been revered. Variously, he bounced a drumstick and caught it in mid-air, swung his foot atop his snare, percussively beat his ruddy cheeks and even created shadow puppets on the wall behind him.

Of course, in the same show he sensitively and creatively engaged in the three-way musical conversation taking place onstage, punctuating and commenting on his colleagues' statements with dazzling acuity while continually ratcheting up the excitement.

Copeland Davis & Matt Savage to Perform at The Florida Everglades Champion Awards Event

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Arthur R. Marshall Foundation to Host
JAZZ IT UP!
For the Everglades!
At the Original Wellington Mall – November 8

2nd Annual Everglades Champion Awards Will Be Announced;
Plus Performances by Legendary Pianist Copeland Davis
& 17-Year-Old Autistic Savant Musician Matt Savage

(West Palm Beach, FL – June 25, 2009) Nancy Marshall, president of the Arthur R. Marshall Foundation, which works for the restoration and preservation of the greater Everglades ecosystem, today announced that the nonprofit organization will be hosting JAZZ IT UP!: For the Everglades, a combination cocktail party, dinner and jazz concert on Sunday, November 8, starting at 5 p.m. The fun and festive event will be held at the original Wellington Mall, located on the corner of Forest Hill Blvd. and Wellington Trace.

A fundraiser for the Marshall Foundation’s Everglades educational programs, JAZZ IT UP! highlights will include:

Champion of the Everglades Awards
The second annual Everglades Champion Awards will be presented in three categories: Elected Official, Individual and Organization. The 2008 recipients were Florida Governor Charlie Crist, environmental philanthropist Mary Barley and the South Florida Water Management District. This year’s three Champion of the Everglades award winners will be announced in a couple of months.

Musical Performances by Copeland Davis & Matt Savage
Pianist Copeland Davis earned a standing ovation following his first performance on NBC's Tonight Show, and later made memorable appearances on Good Morning America and his own PBS special. With his gospel roots and classical training, Davis has earned worldwide acclaim as a jazz innovator who has been strongly influenced by Beethoven. As one music critic declared, Copeland Davis “is a special person. He captivates the audience when he plays. He makes it fun. He has phenomenal technique on the piano. He combines mechanical proficiency with spontaneous artistic creativity. Davis can explore the possibilities of any number of tunes, while still remaining in the boundaries of tight musicianship."

Born in 1992, Matthew “Matt” Savage was diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder, a form of autism, at age three. By age six, he had taught himself to read piano music. After studying classical piano for less than a year, he discovered jazz, which became his main focus. An accomplished musician and composer, Matt has released several albums, both as a solo performer and as part of the Matt Savage Trio. He has performed with Chaka Khan and other popular singers, and has received numerous awards, including being signed in 2003 to Bösendorfer pianos, the only child to be so recognized in the company's 175-year history. Matt has toured the world, performing for heads of state and even headlining at Carnegie Hall. His numerous broadcast appearances include The Today Show, The Late Show with Dave Letterman, The View and NPR’s All Things Considered.

"Holding a successful annual fundraiser is vital to the support of the Marshall Foundation’s grassroots environmental education programs that serve thousands of families every year,” said Marshall. “Architect Frank Lloyd Wright once declared, 'Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you.’ At the Marshall Foundation, we want to help every student in our community to connect with nature. They will make the difference because they are our future!”

Jess & Victoria Santamaria are serving as Grand Benefactors of JAZZ IT UP!, with longtime cultural philanthropists Sydelle Meyer and Joyce McLendon as Honorary Chairs, and Roberta Drey as event Chair.

“JAZZ IT UP! is actually replacing the Marshall Foundation’s annual River of Grass Gala,” said Marshall. “During these tough economic times, we wanted our major fundraiser to be a bit less glitzy and a lot more fun. We are deeply grateful to County Commissioner Jess Santamaria for generously underwriting this vital event.”

“It is also most appropriate that the Marshall Foundation will be hosting our biggest annual fundraiser in Wellington, just a short distance from the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, which is expected to unveil its new state-of-the-art exhibits and interactive displays just a few weeks prior to JAZZ IT UP!,” added Marshall. Certainly those who live closest to the Everglades have proven to be some of the biggest supporters of preserving and restoring our historic River of Grass.”

Tickets for the Marshall Foundation’s JAZZ IT UP! For the Everglades are $125 per person or $1,250 for a table of 10. For more information or to purchase tickets, please call 561.805.TREE (8733) or visit http://www.artmarshall.org/.

Florida CruiseFest to the Bahamas with The Nouveaux Honkies & Ben Prestage (Blues/Roots/Americana)

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Bluzpik Rekerdz USA & Cruise Holidays present a cruise to the Bahamas on Royal Caribbean’s “Monarch of the Seas” departing Port Canaveral, FL on May 21, 2010 and returning on May 24, 2010 featuring The Nouveaux Honkies & Ben Prestage. Passengers will be entertained by two of Florida’s most popular acts including private onboard performances, a beach party, private cocktail party, and up close and personal meet & greets with the bands. In addition to the private performances, cruisers will enjoy a weekend full of Royal Caribbean style fun including all onboard dining, cruise entertainment, and access to ship’s facilities and daily activities.

Pricing for the cruise, based on double occupancy, are $449 per person for indoor cabins, $499 for outside and $849 for Junior Suites with balconies. Fully refundable deposits of $150 per person to confirm reservations are now being accepted. Cruise Holidays is offering an onboard credit of $50 per cabin for all reservations received by October 26, 2009. Reservations can be made by contacting Bob Rossi at Cruise Holidays at 772-408-2210 or via e-mail at brossi@cruiseholidays.com or at any Nouveaux Honkies or Ben Prestage live show.

Who are The Nouveaux Honkies? Head south to the East coast of Florida and you might run into them in the town of Port Salerno. This small commercial fishing village is the stomping ground of singer/guitarist Tim O’Donnell and violinist Rebecca Dawkins, who moved there in 2005 from South Carolina. Stir in the mix of Mike Burney on bass and you have the unmistakable sound of this Blues/Roots Country band. The group started touring after their second album “Where Do I Go” was released in early 2008. After a run to Montana and Idaho that summer, the album made its debut on the Roots Country (Americana) Chart at # 14. After 33 weeks on the national chart, “Where Do I Go” peaked at #3 in early 2009.

Blues Review Magazine linked the sounds to “The Stones, with hints of Dire Straights, Curtis Mayfield, Hendrix, and Wolf”. O’Donnell’s vocal style was said to be “an amalgam of Van Morrison and Willy DeVille”. Violinist Rebecca Dawkins crafts her lead lines over popping rhythms and their unique blend of blues, swing and country becomes the sound that fans describe as a reinvention of the musical wheel.

Ben Prestage spent some time as a street performer on historic Beale Street, while living in Memphis, TN. He used to share a spot in front of the New Daisy Theatre with modern blues legends Robert Belfour (Fat Possum Records) and Richard Johnston (2001 International Blues Competition winner). Being a street musician in the “Blues capital of the South” threw Prestage’s music in a new direction. To his show, he added a cigarbox guitar (made by Memphian one-man-band John Lowe) which has stereo guitar and bass strings that can be played independently, at the same time. Then Ben added a series of four foot pedals that can be manipulated by the heels and toes of both feet to play a drum kit. The final result is Ben playing guitar, bass, and drums while singing his own brand of Blues which leaves bottles empty and dance floors full wherever his music takes him.

Floyd House Restoration Fundraiser to Feature Florida Jazz

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

The Carlisle Floyd House at Millstone Institute

Carlisle Floyd, one of the most celebrated of American opera composers, wrote his world famous opera, Susannah, in a small house in Tallahassee in the mid-1950’s, during his time on the faculty of the School of Music at FSU. With the recent expansion of the FSU campus, the house was in danger of being demolished. Through a generous donation, the house was moved from its original location near FSU to the peaceful setting of the Millstone Institute. Upon restoration, the Floyd House will be used as a creative retreat by composers, musicians, scholars and artists. Millstone is holding a benefit jazz concert and reception to help raise the $25,000 that it will take to fix up the Floyd House.
