2020 Blues Music Awards Submissions Acceptance by Blues Foundation - Opening Soon

All musicians are invited to submit their Blues recordings for consideration. Blues music released between November 1, 2018 and October 31, 2019 is eligible for consideration for a 2020 Blues Music Award Nomination. INSTRUCTIONS You may formally submit your album for consideration once the submission process opens on July 1, 2019 via our online service. Your complete album music must be uploaded as a WAV file with album artwork uploaded as a JPEG or PDF file. If you need assistance with uploading your music, album artwork, and/or liner notes, please contact Joe Whitmer at joe@blues.org. Submission fees and deadlines: July 1 – July 31, 2019 - $135 per submission August 1 – August 31, 2019 - $155 per submission September 1 – September 30, 2019 - $180 per submission October 1 – October 15, 2019 - $225 per submission The submission process officially closes on October 15, 2019. You must upload your music and artwork and complete payment for your submission transaction no later than OCTOBER 15TH to be considered for a Blues Music Award nomination. Opening the Show !

Mac Arnold, who has performed and recorded with Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker, and worked with other huge musical giants such as James Brown and Quincy Jones, is back in Gainesville with his band Plate Full O’ Blues. Arnold, a true gentleman of the blues, toured and recorded live albums with Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker in the 1960s, and has played with many other legendary Blues artists. His high school band was often joined by future soul music legend James Brown on piano. 

Mac Arnold was nominated for best Traditional Blues Male Artist at the 2012 Blues Music Awards. Heading one of the finest live Blues bands today, they headlined the Brick City Blues Festival to rave reviews. Jazz Now said Arnold has “one of the most original voices in blues” and All Music Guide called him “one remaining virtual blues goldmine”. Mac was inducted into the Alabama Blues Hall of Fame in 2017.

Sheba the Mississippi Queen & the Bluesman were International Blues Challenge semifinalists. Sheba’s influences are Billy Holiday, Etta James, Tina Turner, Aretha, and Big Mama Thornton, and she has performed at Springing the Blues, the Coral Gables Blues Festival, and the Long Island Blues Festival. The band includes top musicians steeped in the Blues that have played alongside Buddy Guy and Bo Diddley, among other greats.

An explosive celebration of melody, rhythm and soul, ORIENTE 

was formed in the ‘90s by Cuban guitarist and composer Eddy 

Balzola. They debuted at New Orleans’ premier jazz club, 

Snug Harbor, to an audience accustomed to very funky, 

progressive music and Oriente's hard-driving yet melodic 

Afro-Cuban roots innovations hit the spot. That raw and 

organic music scene was an inspiration and continues to 

influence the band’s soulful sound & style, distinguishing 

ORIENTE from any other Latin Jazz group. 

The band’s 5 th recording, “Soul En Clave”, was just released 
with much critical response. The six selections are a mix of 
original compositions and dedications, including the stand-out,
4-part suite titled “ECHOES OF TRANE TRACKS”. The cut 
pays homage to Coltrane by opening with a chanting 
Afro-Cuban guaguanco, followed by his brilliant and beautiful 
composition Naima, flowing into Balzola’s powerful spoken-
word poem, and ending with an Equinox finale.

Since graduating UM’s Frost School of Music 24-year old vocalist Veronica Swift has swiftly become one of the jazz world’s premier jazz singers.  Besides winning second place at the Thelonious Monk Vocal Competition (while still in school!) she’s since appeared with the Benny Green Trio, Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and Chris Botti, among others,  established a residency at New York’s Birdland Club, toured through the world and signed with premier jazz record label Mack Avenue, with an upcoming August release.

The Faena Summer Jazz Series is thrilled to welcome Veronica’s return to Miami on June 19th at the intimate and glamorous Faena Theater, a perfect venue for the kind of classic jazz song which is Veronica’s specialty. If you love classic, sophisticated jazz in a romantic and intimate venue this is an evening not to miss.

In keeping with her return as one of the Frost School of Music’s notable graduates Veronica will be joined by the Shelly Berg Trio, with Dean Shelly Berg on piano, UM faculty Chuck Bergeron on bass and Gary Novak on drums.

Praised by “The New York Times” as “a singer with a strong and luscious tone and an amiably regal presence on stage,” Alicia Olatuja astounds audiences with her gorgeous voice, artistic versatility and captivating demeanor. She first came into the national spotlight as the featured soloist with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir at President Barack Obama’s second inauguration. Her most recent album, “Intuition: From The Minds of Women”, celebrates the songs of female composers from Brenda Russell to Tracy Chapman. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, she is one of three featured vocalists on the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s national touring project, Songs of Freedom.

Just 18 years old and blind since early childhood, Matthew Whitaker has achieved international acclaim for his awe-inspiring talent and performed across the world in impressive venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and Harlem’s Apollo Theater where, at age 10, he opened for Stevie Wonder’s Hall of Fame induction. He has also charmed millions through his television performances on NBC’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and Fox’s “Showtime At The Apollo”, where he won first place. On August 21, the talented artist makes his return to Faena Theater after performing in Faena's 2018 Summer Jazz Series.

Famed percussionist Sammy Figueroa and his Latin Jazz Explosion returns to Faena Theater for another explosive performance of Latin Jazz featuring special guest Maria Rivas. As one of music's leading percussionists, Figueroa has played with some of the world's greatest artists, such as David Bowie, Chaka Khan and Mariah Carey, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Quincy Jones, George Benson, and many more. Sammy Figueroa and The Latin All Stars will be joined by Maria Rivas, Venezuelan Latin jazz singer whose most recent album, “Motivos”, was nominated for a 2018 Latin Grammy. Rivas has also been recognized as a Latin Grammy Official Artist.
