On Wednesday, May 9, 2018, the Gold Coast Jazz Society will present three of south Florida’s premier jazz vocalists with members of the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band as the closing concert  of this year’s jazz concert series.  The performance will occur at the Amaturo Theater of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW 5th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale at 7:45pm.  Single tickets are available for $55 per person.  Students and teacher tickets are $10 with valid ID.  To purchase single tickets, call the Broward Center AutoNation Box Office at 954-462-0222, or go online to www.browardcenter.org or www.goldcoastjazz.org

Debbie Orta, Wendy Pedersen and Nicole Yarling will perform “Honoring the Great Ladies of Jazz.”   Each of these three jazz divas have a long history in the local jazz scene.  They will be backed by members of the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band, under the direction of Martin Hand.

Vocalist, composer and actor, Debbie Orta paid her dues in the business performing in nightclubs around the country.  She toured as a backup singer for Latin American superstar, Jose Luis Rodriguez, (aka "El Puma"), enjoying the world travel and musical influences from Latin America.  Debbie is a founding member of the Miami Jazz Co-op where performs with an illustrious group of renowned jazz musicians. She has appeared in self-produced multi-media tribute concerts of the Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Peggy Lee songbooks.

Wendy Pedersen is one of South Florida’s favorite performers. Her high energy delivery, with deep, convincing emotion, has been impacting audiences for years. A highly sought after studio singer, Wendy can be heard on hundreds of recordings including those of Christina Aguilera, Alejandro Sanz, Julio Iglesias, Enrique Iglesias, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Chayanne, James Brown, and Raul Diblasio- just to name a few.  Her discography includes Boy Meets Girl, Me + Three, Ho Ho Ho, and Under the Influence.

Vocalist, jazz violinist and educator Nicole Yarling has been part of the local jazz scene since the 1980’s, working in jazz, rock, R&B, experimental music, and a few other styles that defy description. Both a professional performer and a music educator, Nicole serves on the faculty of Florida Memorial University and the University of Miami. She also uses her various musical skills to lead the JCC Jazz Bootcamp, various master classes and vocal lessons and leads the GCJS First Friday Jazz Jams.

Backyard Blues Down at The Blue Tavern Highlights May's Jazz & Blues Calendar.

The Room Full of People
Spills Out Into The Parking Lot
Saturday, May 19, 2018!

After a year and a half in business, Blue Tavern is set to host its first blues festival. Backyard Blues will be an all-day, all-ages event, rain or shine with indoor and outdoor stages. An outdoor stage will be in the alley/green space behind the building, accessible from 5th Avenue. Music starts at 3 pm on Saturday, May 19, and lasts til after midnight.

Those who are acquainted with Blue Tavern know the venue hosts a multitude of music styles and genres, but the first love of the owner, Maggie McKeown [pronounce mik-KEW-en] is down home blues. The purpose of the festival is to promote blues music in the community, but mainly to have fun and provide an event for everyone to enjoy.

The lineup includes Sir Charles Atkins & his New Blue Band, Avis Berry, Brett Wellman & Chris Balding, Darryl Steele and friends, Belmont & Jones, Jon Copps, Frank Lindamood, Caleb Vaughn, and Gainesville’s favorite blues outfit – the Bridget Kelly Band.

The Tavern's kitchen will be open all day, and outside food vendors will be on hand to supplement the regular fare. Beer, wine, coffee, tea, and sodas are available inside. No coolers, please – but lawn chairs are encouraged.

Parking is available in lots nearby and on several side streets. Look for the blue-and-white signs! There is a bike rack for those wishing to pedal their way to the festival.

Tickets are available for purchase at the Tavern and at MusicMasters, or on-line at bluetaverntallahassee.com. Advance tickets are $20-$22, $25/$27 at the gate.
