Florida Student Musicians Invited to Audition for Prestigious Florida All-State Jazz Bands

June 21, 2026

Florida middle and high school band students now have the opportunity to audition for one of the state's most respected music education honors programs: the Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA) All-State Bands and Jazz Bands.

For students, parents, and community members unfamiliar with the program, the information published by the Florida Bandmasters Association is often written primarily for band directors and students already involved in school music programs. As a result, many talented young musicians and their families may not fully understand what the All-State process is, why it matters, or how to participate.

What Is Florida All-State?

The Florida All-State Bands and Jazz Bands bring together many of the highest-achieving student musicians from across Florida. Students audition in the fall, compete against others throughout the state, and those earning the highest scores are selected to perform in elite statewide ensembles during the annual Florida Music Education Association (FMEA) Professional Development Conference in Tampa each January.

The program includes:

• Middle School Band (Grades 7-8)
• Concert Band (Grades 9-10)
• Symphonic Band (Grades 11-12)
• Middle School Jazz Band
• High School Jazz Band

Students audition on prepared technical and lyrical exercises, scales, sight-reading, and, for jazz applicants, jazz-specific excerpts and improvisation requirements.

Who Can Participate?

Eligible students must be enrolled in a Florida public school, private school, charter school, virtual school, or approved home education music program, and must be active participants in their school's band program under the sponsorship of an active FBA/FMEA member director. Additional provisions exist for home-education students.

How Do Students Register?

One of the details that is not always obvious to newcomers is that students do not register themselves. Registration is handled through the student's school band director using the Florida Music Performance Assessment (MPA) Online system. Students interested in auditioning should speak with their band director as early as possible.
