As part of the New Tampa Jazz Nights series, Tampa Jazz Club presents Overjoyed: A Stevie Wonder Tribute, featuring Stretch’s Rubberband. The ensemble is led by Bay Area jazz scene veteran Richard “Stretch” Bruyn, whose work as a bassist, arranger, and bandleader has made him a familiar presence on stages throughout the region.
This program highlights the depth and range of Stevie Wonder’s catalog, drawing from a body of work that spans more than six decades. From early Motown recordings through the landmark albums of the 1970s and beyond, Wonder’s music has remained influential across jazz, soul, R&B, and pop. His compositions are known for strong melodies, rhythmic variety, and harmonic sophistication, qualities that translate naturally to a live ensemble setting.
Stretch’s Rubberband approaches this material with arrangements that respect the original recordings while allowing room for interpretation and improvisation. The group’s presentation reflects both the precision of Wonder’s studio work and the flexibility of live jazz performance, offering familiar songs in a fresh setting.
The tribute focuses on selections that have become part of the broader American songbook, including well-known titles that continue to connect with listeners across generations. Through this performance, Tampa Jazz Club’s New Tampa Jazz Nights series continues its focus on programming that connects audiences with influential artists and enduring musical works.
