The music of Argentine composer and bandoneón virtuoso Astor Piazzolla reshaped the global perception of tango during the second half of the 20th century. Widely recognized as the architect of nuevo tango, Piazzolla fused traditional tango with elements of jazz and classical composition, creating a distinctive modern sound that expanded the genre well beyond the dance halls of Buenos Aires.
Among the most widely recognized recordings in his catalog is Tango: Zero Hour, released in 1986. Piazzolla’s body of work helped establish tango as a concert music form heard in major performance venues around the world.
Following Piazzolla’s passing in 1992, his musical legacy has continued through the work of Quinteto Astor Piazzolla. Formed in 1998, the ensemble is dedicated to performing and preserving the composer’s repertoire through the quintet format most closely associated with his sound: bandoneón, violin, piano, guitar, and double bass.
When Quinteto Astor Piazzolla appears at Ferguson Hall at the Straz Center Tampa on March 15, 2026, the program will bring listeners a live concert centered on the rhythmic intensity, melodic drama, and expressive character that define Piazzolla’s music.
