39th Annual
North Carolina Jazz Festival
Wilmington, NC
Back in the late 1950’s and early 60’s there was a jazz phenomenon – a new style of jazz, from the South American country of Brazil, which made its’ way to the U.S. and the world with the help of American saxophonist Stan Getz. The creator of this new style of jazz was Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Continuing in our efforts to bring different styles of jazz to the North Carolina Jazz Festival’s opening night each year, the NCJF presents Brazilian Jazz on Thursday night, at our 39th annual event. Headlining this segment will be Brazilian born vocalist Maucha Adnet and her husband Duduka da Fonseca, percussionist. Adnet sang with Jobim for 10 years A native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, she now resides in New York City, where she is a very busy performer. Da Fonseca, also a native Brazilian, is a member of Trio da Paz, a renown Samba band revered from Rio to Lincoln Center!
Joining them for this salute to Brazilian Jazz will be NYC’s Harry Allen on tenor sax, re-creating the sounds of Stan Getz; Israeli born Ehud Asheri – piano; Tampa native Nate Najar – guitar; and internationally acclaimed, U.S. born, Chuck Redd on vibes. This great American Heritage, JAZZ, is loved and played world-wide, and we are proud to bring some of the best international jazz musicians together on our stage to perform a style of jazz nurtured in Brazil.
The critics and cognoscenti agree: jazz guitarist Nate Najar’s virtuosity
exudes a dynamic and truly intoxicating elegance. His artistry evokes
a modern and progressive attitude that perpetuates the legacy of the
great Charlie Byrd. But while Najar’s imaginative playing is steeped in
Byrd’s tradition it nevertheless emulates a collection of other artistic
musical influences, including classical, bebop, fusion, bossa nova and
even post modern, which have all culminated to inspire a player whose
sophisticated and often innovative artistry has placed him in many of
the world’s most prestigious music venues and produced many superb
recordings.
