FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Pianist/Composer ELLEN ROWE and an
All-Star Ensemble at USF

Debut of “Momentum – Portraits of Women in Motion” at Monday Night Jazz, on January 28

The next concert in USF’s Monday Night Jazz Series, in the USF Concert Hall on January 28 at 7:30 p.m., will present new music by an all-woman, all-star ensemble led by pianist and composer Ellen Rowe. The 8-piece band will play pieces from “Momentum – Portraits of Women in Motion,” all dedicated to inspirational figures in fields ranging from music to athletics, and social justice to environmental preservation.

The Monday Night Jazz Series, now in its 22nd year, is presented by the USF School of Music and the Tampa Jazz Club.

A 20-year faculty member at the University of Michigan, Ellen Rowe is a major figure in jazz education. Her compositions have been performed by leading jazz orchestras throughout the world, and she has been in demand as a pianist by prominent artists for years. On two occasions, Ms. Rowe appeared as Marian McPartland’s guest on her NPR series, “Piano Jazz.”

Ellen Rowe’s exciting new “Momentum” project is so new that the USF audience will hear this music before the cd-release concert, to be held in Ann Arbor a few days later. And she has brought together some of the most outstanding women in the jazz world for the occasion:

Ingrid Jensen, trumpet
Melissa Gardiner, trombone
Tamara Danielsson, alto saxophone
Virginia Mayhew, tenor saxophone
Lisa Parrott, baritone saxophone
Marion Hayden, bass
Allison Miller, drums
Ellen Rowe, piano

“Momentum – Portraits of Women in Motion” includes musical dedications to Michelle Obama, Billie Jean King, Joni Mitchell, Jane Goodall, and Ellen’s close friend, the late pianist Geri Allen, among many others. Wherever they perform, members of the Ellen Rowe Octet mentor and collaborate with aspiring young female jazz artists and include them in their presentations. January’s Monday Night Jazz will be a rare chance for listeners to share in this celebration of the courage, talent, tenacity, and grace of Ellen Rowe’s inspirations, and experience the message in her music!
