Top Groups to Appear at 59th Monterey Jazz Festival, September 16-18, 2016.

 In the College Big Band Division, top honors went to the University of Miami Frost School of Music Concert Jazz Band (Coral Gables, Fla.), John Daversa, director, for their second win in the division since 2014. The runner-up was USC Thornton School Jazz Orchestra (Los Angeles, Calif.), Bob Mintzer, director. Tying for third place was the UNLV Jazz Ensemble l (Las Vegas, Nev.), Dave Loeb and Nathan Tanouye, directors, and Michigan State University Jazz Orchestra I (East Lansing, Mich.), Etienne Charles, director. The University of Miami Frost School of Music Concert Jazz Band will perform at the 59th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival in September.

In the College Combo Division, top honors went to University of Miami Frost School of Music Dafnis Prieto Artist Ensemble (Coral Gables, Fla.), Dafnis Prieto, director, their first win in the division. The runner-up was USC Thornton School of Music Jazz Combo (Los Angeles, Calif.), Jason Goldman, director. Third place went to the California State University, Northridge (Northridge, Calif.), Victor San Pedro, director. The University of Miami Frost School of Music Dafnis Prieto Artist Ensemble will perform at the 59th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival in September.

In the High School Big Band Division, top honors went to Northgate High School (Walnut Creek, Calif.), Greg Brown, director, winning for the third year in a row. Second place, Folsom High School Jazz Band I (Folsom, Calif.), Curtis Gaesser, director. Third place went to Las Vegas Academy of the Arts Jazz Band, (Las Vegas, Nev.) Patrick Bowen, director. All three bands will perform at the 59th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival in September. Northgate High School is only the third school to win the division three times in a row since 1971.

In the High School Combo Division, top honors went to Wellington Secondary School Combo (Nanaimo, BC, Canada), Carmella Luvisotto, director. Wellington Secondary is the first international winner of any Next Generation Jazz Festival Division, and the first duo to win as well. The runner-up was the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts Combo A (Los Angeles, Calif.), Jason Goldman, director. Third place went to the Crossroads School Jazz Ensemble (Santa Monica, Calif.), Evan Avery, director. The Wellington Secondary School will perform at the 59th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival in September.

In the High School Conglomerate Combo Division, top honors went to the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars Jazz Combo (San Francisco, Calif.), Dann Zinn, director, for their first win in the division. The runner-up was the American Music Program Pacific Crest Combo I (Portland, Ore.), Thara Memory, director. Third place went to Colburn Jazz Workshop Monday Night Band (Los Angeles, Calif.), Lee Secard, director. The SFJAZZ High School All-Stars Jazz Combo will perform at the 59th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival in September.

In the High School Vocal Ensemble Division, top honors went to the LA County High School for the Arts Vocal Ensemble (Los Angeles, Calif.), Pat Bass, director. LACHSA has won the High School Vocal Division six times since 1997. The runner-up was Valencia High School “Two N’ Four” (Valencia, Calif.), Christine Tavares-Mocha, director. Third place went to Folsom High School Jazz Choir I (Folsom, Calif.), Curtis Gaesser, director. The LA County High School for the Arts Vocal Ensemble and Valencia High School “Two N’ Four” will perform at the 59th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival in September.

In the College Vocal Ensemble Division, the top group was California State University, Sacramento “C Sus Voices” (Sacramento, Calif.) Gaw Vang, director, their first win in the division. The runner-up was California State University, Long Beach “Pacific Standard Time” (Long Beach, Calif.), Christine Guter, director. Third place went to College of the Canyons “Just Jazz” (Valencia, Calif.), Julie Lawson, director. California State University, Sacramento “C Sus Voices” will perform at the 59th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival in September.

In the Conglomerate Big Band Division, top honors went to the American Music Program Pacific Crest Jazz Orchestra (Portland, Ore.), Thara Memory, director, for their first win in the division since 2008. Tied for the runner-up position was the Jazzschool Studio Band (Berkeley, Calif.), Dave Eshelman, director and the Tucson Jazz Institute “Ellington” Band (Tucson, Az.), Doug Tidaback, director. The American Music Program Pacific Crest Jazz Orchestra will perform at the 59th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival in September.

The Next Generation Jazz Festival Presented by Monterey Jazz Festival got off to a spectacular start on Friday, April 8 with a sold out crowd of nearly 1200 in the temporary Monterey Conference Center Pavilion tent for the Friday Night Judges Concert, with music the Josh Shpak Quartet from Berklee College of Music, pianist Helen Sung, saxophonists Joel Frahm, Tia Fuller, Gary Smulyan, and Paul Contos, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington; trombonist Luis Bonilla; trumpeters Gilbert Castellanos and George Stone, bassist Ray Drummond; guitarist Bruce Forman; and vocalist James Tormé. After the concert, a large number of students remained to participate in the traditional student jam session, hosted by the University of Las Vegas; and a special fundraising reception raised 20 thousand dollars for Monterey Jazz Festival’s education programs.

Saturday’s activities included more than 90 back-to-back performances on five stages in downtown Monterey. In addition, clinics were held by Josh Shpak, from Berklee College of Music, Artist-In-Residence Terri Lyne Carrington, and composer/arranger Vince Mendoza.  After nine hours of performances, students and parents packed the Conference Center Pavilion to hear the announcement of the top high school big bands, vocal ensembles and combos, and soloist and scholarship award winners.

The Showcase Concert later that evening was a preview of the 2016 Monterey Jazz Festival, which included performances from the top placing groups, including Northgate High School Big Band, the Folsom High School Jazz Band I, the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts Jazz Band, the Wellington Secondary School Duo, LA County High School for the Arts Vocal Ensemble, and Valencia High School “Two N’ Four.”

On Sunday morning, the final divisions of the Next Generation Jazz Festival took place, with a special improvisation clinic from Joel Frahm. The non-competing Middle School Division bands received best section awards after performing in the De Anza Ballroom, including citations for Seattle Washington’s Eckstein and Jane Addams middle schools; and Folsom California’s Sutter Middle School.

In the Conference Center Pavilion, Conglomerate Big Band Division represented the best-of-the-best high school musicians. Winning the top award for the first time since 2006 was Portland Oregon’s Pacific Crest Jazz Orchestra.

The College Big Band Division featured some of the most advanced groups in the nation and the University of Miami Frost School of Music Concert Band took top honors, their second win in the division since their first appearance in 2014.

The High School Conglomerate Combo Division was won by the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars Jazz Combo, for their first win in the division.

Sunday afternoon featured the College Vocal Ensemble Division in the De Anza Ballroom, with each of the six top schools in the country. California State University, Sacramento “C Sus Voices” took top honors for the first time in the division.

Also on Sunday, behind closed doors, live auditions for the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra were taking place. The Orchestra, one of the premier high school big bands in the United States, is Monterey Jazz Festival's national high school showcase band, filled with all-star musicians from around the country.

The Next Generation Jazz Festival provided free Web streaming from the Pavilion Stage and De Anza Ballroom all weekend, with nearly 2700 fans from 30 countries watching 6200 streams. Performances from both locations were available on local TV and online, broadcast by Access Monterey Peninsula.

The 47th Next Generation Jazz Festival Presented by Monterey Jazz Festival is slated for March 31-April 2, 2017 and will continue to draw the country's superior level student bands, vocalists, and individual musicians.
