Big hearts and kind souls came
together at Boston's on the Beach in Delray Beach last night. The event was a fund raiser for Val Ward who is undergoing treatment for cancer. Charlie Boyer, Debby,
Little Mike, Jimmy Belize, Maxine and I shared a table. The rest of the room was
filled with almost every BLUES musician in
Florida.
Most of the true
BLUES fans were there as well. Blues Bobby and his wife, Piano Bob and Mary,
Tania BLUES, Jay Skolnick, Betty Rosenthal, Jim Nestor(the booker), Merry Mary Council and John Yurt(BackRoom) were there. Lots of folks that I recognized from other
BLUES venues including the Big Easy, Fish Tales and The Funky Biscuit. Many of
the musicians were there to perform, others to add their support for the worthy
cause. In addition to a great night of music there were raffle prizes and a
silent auction. I would name all the musicians but a guy tipped a beer glass
over and drowned some of my scribbled notes. Some of those names follow; Mark
Telesca and Mike Hundley(Blues Dragon), Jerry Mascaro, J.L. Fulks, Nicole Hart,
Rockin' Jake, Joel DaSilva(Midnight Howl) and Stan Waldman. Musicians who
performed were J.P. Soars and the Red Hots with Chris Peet on drums, Ken
Burkhart, Little Mike(the Tornadoes), Eddie Blake, Capt.Reese and the Son of Man
band, the Nucklebusters Pat and Famous Frank Ward, Ricco, the Regulators and
many others whose names went down with the ship, drowned in beer. If I were to
run through the playlist it would reflect BLUES history. Every kind of BLUES
including rock-a-billy and boogie-woogie filled the room with sound. I danced
with Debby, Jimmy danced with Maxine and lots of folks danced with lots of
folks and some even with themselves. Chris Peet told me that he started to play
drums when after helping a friend move, was informed that he could take anything
he wanted, in thanks. At first he declined but his pal insisted. There were two
drum kits. He was told he could have the smaller of the two. Thus began the
career of Chris Peet. Thank you to all the musicians who donated their talent,
Cd's and T-shirts. Thanks to Boston's for hosting this event. Thanks to all the
warm hearted BLUES fans who made contributions. Thanks to Charlie Boyer who
allows me to write and then publishes this stuff on line at JAZZ & BLUES
Florida.

Al's Disclaimer:
A short note: The reason I write this is because I love music and words. I do not book acts. I do not promote acts. I do not accept invitations to review artists. I go to venues of my own choice. When and where is not influenced by anything other than who I would like to hear that night or day. If I don't like what I hear, I won't write about it. When I like it I let you all know. I never mention a name without asking permission. "Pardon me, Miss. Would you like to dance?"
