UM Frost School of Music Student Places 3rd in Jazz Piano Competition

University of Miami Frost School of Music student Emmet Cohen placed third in the 2011 Thelonious Monk Jazz Piano Competition

University of Miami Frost School of Music student Emmet Cohen (piano) performed last night as one of the three finalists in the 2011 Thelonious Monk Jazz Piano Competition at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. – he placed third. Cohen made the cut after performing Sunday as one of the 12 semi-finalists in the annual competition, which this year celebrates its 25th anniversary.

Judges included Herbie Hancock, Ellis Marsalis, Jason Moran, Danilo Perez and Renee Rosnes.

Antonio Madruga (Pembroke Pines, Florida) also competed as a semi-finalist.
