Blues Society brings the “The Challenge” back!
The 5th Annual Central Florida Blues Challenge, sponsored by the Orange Blossom Blues Society, is scheduled for Sunday, October,23rd on the George Linson stage at McWell’s. This “Battle of the Bands” type competition will send one local Blues act to Memphis , Tennessee to compete at the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge in January 2012.
The 5th Annual Central Florida Blues Challenge will be held on Sunday, October 23rd at McWell’s Restaurant & Bar, 4757 South Orange Avenue, Orlando , Florida 32806 . The event is produced and promoted by The Orange Blossom Blues Society, OBBS, an Orlando based, non-profit organization, dedicated to preserving, promoting and presenting the Blues genre in Central Florida . The Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge, known as the IBC, is now in its 28th year, and has evolved into the nation’s largest and most respected showcase for Blues musicians ready to take their act to the international stage. The CFBC winner will earn the right to compete at the IBC along with 160 other bands from around the world for a chance to jump start their career on the national level.
The International Blues Challenge is a judged “Battle of the Bands” in which competitors take the stage and play a short set for a panel of judges. They are judged on Blues content, Talent, Originality and Stage presence. Blues greats that have competed in the IBC over the years include: Susan Tedeschi, Slick Ballinger, Ben Prestage, Michael Burks, Tommy Castro, Albert Cummings, Delta Moon, Larry Garner, Diunna Greenleaf, Zac Harmon, Richard Johnston, Matthew Skoller, Watermelon Slim, Albert Castiglia and Michelle Wilson
The OBBS is currently looking for blues bands who are interested in taking their act to the national stage to participate in this event. Submissions will be accepted starting Sunday, August 23nd thru September 23rd. There will be a $80.00 application fee for each application submitted.
Tickets will be $10 advance, $8 for OBBS members/students/military and $12 day of show, $10 for OBBS members/students/military. The proceeds from this event will be used to defer the cost of sending the winning band to the IBC as well as fund the operations of the OBBS for the coming year.
