Smokestack Lightnin' Celebrates 20 Years of Broadcasting Blues out of Orlando Florida

20 Years ago this month, Smokestack Lightnin’, a show dedicated to the musical genre known as “The Blues”,  debuted on WPRK, the radio voice of Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. The initial show was 2 hours long and had a 6pm Sunday afternoon time slot. Most of the music for the early shows was vintage blues on 12” vinyl discs as the producers only had a very few CDs, and almost no “New” blues CDs. Many record companies were contacted and slowly the new blues CDs began to arrive in the mail.

The objective of Smokestack Lightnin’ was then, and continues to be a vehicle to introduce new blues recordings to our listening audience. The show shifted to WLOQ, the Orlando Market’s leading commercial Jazz station in 1994, and then shifted to WUCF (University of Central Florida) in 2002.

The show’s producers took the show to the internet in 1997, making Smokestack Lightnin’ a webcasting pioneer and began syndicating to radio stations and other webcasters throughout the U.S. and Canada just this past year. The show is currently 3 hours weekly and features as many a 25 brand new releases a week. The Top Ten Blues CDs are counted down weekly and the Top 25 Blues CDs are counted down at the end of each month.
