Moonlight Concert @ The Kampong
Evening concert series concludes 2009/2010 season with South Florida Jazz great Joe Donato
Coconut Grove, FL – The Kampong, the Miami location for the National Tropical Botanical Garden, concludes its first successful season of Moonlight concerts next month with South Florida jazz legend Joe Donato. The last of four highly acclaimed concerts will be held on Saturday, May 15th.; gates open at 8 p.m., and the music begins at 9 p.m. Joe Donato’s unique style and flair with the saxophone and multiple other instruments make him an immensely versatile performer who lights up the stage of any venue with the class and style reminiscent of Big Band days. His long career has taken him around the world on numerous tours and he is practically an institution on the South Florida musical scene. Everyone agrees that he is more than just a talented musician; he is what is referred to as a musician’s musician – widely respected and admired by his peers and generous in sharing the spotlight with his talented ensemble and special guests.
Billing itself as Miami’s newest upscale venue for fine jazz and live music, The Kampong transforms itself into the tropical ultra-chic K Lounge for the evening. The recently added covered pavilion with stage, designed by noted Miami architect Max Strang, provides near-perfect acoustics and is the ideal small setting for the live-music aficionado. “Sitting in the K Lounge, surrounded by lush, fragrant gardens and listening to crickets chirping to the tempo of the amazing music is a sublime experience,” said Vivianne Swietelsky, Kampong Fellow and Chair of the Moonlight Concert committee. “We envisioned creating a special venue, where locals and visitors to Miami could enjoy top-quality live performances in an exquisite ambiance while becoming more acquainted with the beauty of The Kampong and all that it has to offer. I believe that we have succeeded”, she added.
The Moonlight Concert @ The Kampong series at the K Lounge has been warmly welcomed as a noteworthy addition to Miami’s musical scene, both by audiences and by the excellent musicians who have loved performing there to eclectic, appreciative audiences. “The Kampong's ‘K Lounge’ is one of the most enjoyable listening experiences in Miami,” said renowned jazz pianist Shelly Berg, Dean of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. “When you combine the incomparable atmosphere of the Kampong, the music of great artists, the wonderful acoustics of the venue, and the intimacy of the experience, it adds up to a very special evening”, he added. Dean Berg, who, along with acclaimed vocalist Carmen Bradford, was featured at the memorable opening night concert last November said that he looks forward to returning to the K Lounge with Ms. Bradford during the 2010/2011 season.
In addition to series sponsor Steinway and Sons of Coral Gables, The Kampong is pleased to announce its newest partner, GREY GOOSE Vodka. Three seating categories are available, and all ticket prices include cocktails courtesy of GREY GOOSE Vodka. Guests seated in the prime K Lounge seating area will be treated to a very special GREY GOOSE tableside “mixology” experience featuring custom-made artisanal cocktails.
“We’ve enjoyed bringing a new and diverse audience to The Kampong, sharing great music in a great setting, and establishing new relationships brought about by the Moonlight concert series,” said Ann Parsons, Director of The Kampong. “We are grateful to our sponsors, Steinway and Sons and GREY GOOSE Vodka, as well as to the many wonderful community volunteers for their help in making this series possible,” Ms. Parsons, added.
