mjc & Paulette... a match made for Al in Coral Gables for Valentine's?

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 2/14/13

Having recovered somewhat from the debauchery of Fat Tuesday I emerged into the sunlight and headed for the Coral Gables Museum. The Miami Jazz Co-op's program "JAZZ in the Gables" was presenting Paulette Dozier and her trio. The group had Mike Levine on keys, Kai Sanchez on bass and well known James Cotman on drums. Ms. Dozier opened the set with an enchanting "You’ll Never Know" and continued with "Falling Leaves" in an unusual "shuffle" beat. Continuing in the standards theme she did "Route 66" accompanied by a rousing solo from Mike. Paulette appears in a stage production about Billie Holiday's life. She dedicated "G-d Bless the Child" to Lady Day's memory. She not only sings "good" she is nice to look at. Don't get the wrong idea, fellas. She is happily married and her husband sent a beautiful vase full of roses for her to have at her performance. Paulette did "Summertime" and an original composed by Mike and herself.

There were about 100 or so folks enjoying lunch, the sunshine and the music. Among the regulars were "Grandma Pixie", Walter and his wife and David (6) with his brother Antonio (8) and their mother Conchita. I learned long ago never to ask or reveal a woman’s age. The Miami JAZZ Co-op and the Museum are expanding the program. Check the listings.

Paulette Dozier will be appearing in the play at a theater in Miami Beach in the month of March. I haven't seen it yet but folks who have say it is very good.

Riverwalk Blues & Music Festival at the Downtowner in Ft. Lauderdale---Birdland Big Band at SouthMiami-Dade Cultural Arts Center---Johnny Rawls* at Arts Garage in Delray Beach---Great stuff at the Funky Biscuit---Paulette on Ed Bells radio show (WLRN) Friday at 1PM. What is one, with a simple mind and only one (but ample) body to do? Well, I know I shall go forth (Shakespearian huh?). To where? To be determined!!

*Advance tickets are SOLD-OUT. GA tickets available at door at show time. Good luck! THIS IS THE SHOW OF THE MONTH IN FLORIDA! Charlie
