South Florida’s local, legendary Dean of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, American Steinway Piano artist Shelly Berg is a staid and steady hand for our New Year rendition of “Gershwin Top 20 Celebration.” Don’t miss the Shelly Berg Trio LIVE at The Amaturo Theater of Broward Center for the Performing Arts on January 12, 2022.

This quintessential artist who considered himself a musician from the age of four began music academia at age six in a gifted children’s program at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He went on to study with Maxine Priest, Lucien Lemieux, and Albert Hirsh, Rudolph Serkin and Abbey Simon, who many consider to be the greatest music teachers of all time!

Throughout his forty-year career as a Dean, father and professor, Berg has prioritized his composing and playing music, with his family and work life, while promoting his performance career as well. He says modestly that the phone has been ringing all that time and he is humbly grateful.

Known for his collaborations and orchestrations with jazz vocalists, which some have labeled “magnificent,” Berg has performed, recorded and arranged for Patti Austin, Nancy Wilson, Bobby McFerrin, Kurt Elling, Monica Mancini, Dionne Warwick, Tierney Sutton, Lorraine Feather and Carmen Bradford; and has performed and/or recorded with a “Who’s Who” of jazz legends including Ray Brown, Louie Bellson, Eddie Daniels, Peter Erskine, Jon Faddis, Woody Herman, James Moody, Arturo Sandoval, Tom Scott, Clark Terry and Bill Watrous, to name a few.

A magnificent man who is “immensely proud of [his] recent recording, ‘Gershwin Reimagined: An American in London’ (Decca Gold), recorded in London under the baton of José Serebrier with the sublime Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. As a jazz and classical pianist, he says, “I have always felt a deep affinity for Gershwin’s music.” In January he will grace the stage at Broward County, FL’s Amaturo Theater with some renditions of music near and dear to his heart.

With sidemen, Dafnis Prieto, drums and Carlo De Rosa on bass, the trio offers a gentle and easy entry into some classics that feel familiar and remind us of home. Cuban-born Prieto is a GRAMMY-winning musician for his big band album, Back to the Sunset, which DownBeat called "one of the best recordings of the year. As a US Jazz Ambassador in 1999 Carlo de Rosa traveled to South Africa, Mauritius, Madagascar, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. Other performances abroad have led him to countries as varied as France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Estonia, Russia, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Holland, Belgium, Czech Republic, Argentina, Chile, Romania, Slovenia, Denmark, England, Scotland and Ireland.

The Gold Coast Jazz Society is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of jazz music through a mainstage concert series, free community concerts, educational programs, a jazz scholarship program and musical services provided by the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band.

Gold Coast Jazz Society History
Frederick G. Ruffner, Jr. had a vision to bring more jazz to the “Gold Coast” area of South Florida.  In 1992, Fred and a group of avid jazz buffs made this vision a reality by forming a non-profit organization called the Gold Coast Jazz Society in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Following its formation, the GCJS developed a concert series, which was presented in the main dining room of the historic Riverside Hotel, located on the famous Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale.  As the concert series continued to grow and expand, a larger venue was required.  The concert series was eventually moved to the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, located in the Arts & Science District of Fort Lauderdale.  Today, the seven-concert jazz series continues to be presented in the Amaturo Theater each year from November through May.  Over the years the Society has grown and expanded to include the presentation of jazz education and community outreach activities, the Jeanette M. Russell Jazz Scholarship Program, and many special events throughout the year.

Funding for this organization is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council, the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture and is supported by Funding Arts Broward, supporting innovative local visual and performing arts in Broward County.  Concert Series sponsors include American National Bank, Morgan Stanley, and the Mary Porter Fund of the Community Foundation of Broward.  Sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture.
