A Centennial Salute to one of the all-time jazz greats, Dizzy Gillespie, will open the Tampa Jazz Club season of Sunday afternoon concerts at HCC/Ybor City, part of the HCC Visual & Performing Arts Series. The October 8 concert, at 3:00pm, will feature trumpeter JAMES SUGGS with the BOP LEGACY ENSEMBLE and special guest, percussionist GUMBI ORTIZ.
James Suggs has been a galvanizing force in the Bay Area jazz scene for the past three years, following eight years living and playing in Buenos Aires. His tributes to Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis have been unforgettable concerts, and listeners are still talking about Bop Legacy’s concert last January for the TJC audience at HCC/Ybor, a celebration of Stan Getz and Chet Baker. This band is a Bay Area treasure: along with James Suggs, the group includes AUSTIN VICKREY, saxophone; STRETCH BRUYN, piano; BILLY PILLUCERE, bass; and JOE RENDA, drums.
And here’s a special treat – the electrifying GUMBI ORTIZ will join the band on conga drums! Known to audiences around the world, Gumbi has been in the band of guitar legend Al DiMeola since 1987, along with his Latino Project and New Groove City. We’re thrilled to catch him on a break between tours.
Jazz fans everywhere are celebrating John Birks Gillespie this October. One of the architects of bebop and modern jazz, Dizzy is remembered for his tremendous virtuosity, harmonic sophistication, pioneering Afro-Cuban sounds, and his singular sense of humor. Come and join the celebration, as we begin a new season of Tampa Jazz Club Sunday concerts in the beautiful Mainstage Theatre at HCC/Ybor City.
