Big band is back in a big way as legendary, 94-year-old big band and jazz trumpeter Pauly Cohen leads an 18-piece orchestra for a rare performance in “One Mo’ Time” in Margate on Sunday, April 23.
The twilight event takes place at the Stage Door Theater, 8036 Sample Road, Margate, Florida, 33065, on Sunday, April 23, from 4 PM – 6 PM. The Stage Door Theatre is located at the back of the Holiday Springs Shopping Center and has ample free parking. Cohen leads an 18-piece orchestra composed of South Florida’s top musicians, including fellow legends Dennis Noday and Jack Siegel. Guest vocalists include LeNard Rutledge (voted best jazz artist by Miami New Times) and Rosina Zimmer.
Still going strong into his 10th decade, Pauly Cohen has played lead trumpet for greats such as Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, Tommy Dorsey, Quincy Jones and Dizzy Gillespie. The jazz elder originally came to Florida to retire, but it wasn’t to be. Instead, the iconic trumpeter reassembled his big band and has continued blowing his horn for the delight of South Florida music lovers.
Born in Brooklyn in 1922, the teen aged Cohen won a prestigious scholarship to study with William Vacchiano, the longtime principal trumpeter of the New York Philharmonic. At 18, he left home and symphonic study and moved to Manhattan, looking for music gigs. The “Young Man With a Horn” quickly found them, first in the Earl Hines Big Band in the 1940s, where he met Charlie Parker and became acquainted with Dizzy Gillespie. Later, Cohen was lead trumpeter for the bands of Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman and Charlie Barnett. The high point was when he spent five years as lead trumpet for the Count Basie Band.
The April 23 event is for one night only and is produced by Lisa Mileti and presented by Legends Radio, 100.3 FM. For further information, contact Lisa Mileti at 561-235-9293 or lisa.mileti@gmail.com. For tickets, call 954-344-7765 or go online at www.stagedoorfl.org/tickets .
