Legends in Jazz in
“Jazz in the Sanctuary”
2015-2016 Series

The thirteenth season of “Jazz in the Sanctuary” starts this weekend in the beautiful sanctuary at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Stuart, the second year in this venue. Two of the four concerts will include legendary artists! This November concert will feature multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan, and our February concert will feature the great jazz pianist Bill Mays.

The first concert will be Sunday afternoon, November 8, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. Featured along with Ira Sullivan will be the fine vocalist Anita Smith, flutist Mark Bender, bassist Taddy Mowatt, drummer Claudio Berardi, along with Jim van Voorheis (Jazzy Jim), pianist.

The second concert, Monday evening, December 14, 2015 at 7:00 p.m., will be Christmas Jazz Concert, and will feature Victorya Cole, jazz vocalist, with the multi-talented Mark Green playing trumpet, flügelhorn and flute, along with Jim van Voorheis, keyboards, Taddy Mowatt, bass, and Claudio Berardi, drums.

Bill Mays
Bill Mays is one of the world’s finest jazz pianists, and originally well-known as Sarah Vaughan’s accompanist. He will be performing at the Valentine’s concert Sunday afternoon, February 7, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. An opening quartet consisting of Phil Axelband, trumpet, Jim van Voorheis, piano, Angelo Arcadipane, bass and Stuart Joseph, drums will perform the first half-hour.

The final concert, March 13, 2016, also on a Sunday afternoon at 4:00 PM, will feature a dynamic piano explosion with two pianists, Don Bestor and Jim van Voorheis. A great singer, Debbie Bestor, will also amaze you with her jazz vocals. In addition, bassist Taddy Mowatt and drummer Claudio Berardi will entertain you.

Our concerts are noted for being well-planned and organized, and the band even wears Jerry Garcia ties, getting many compliments for looking so good. The organizer of “Jazz in the Sanctuary,” Jim van Voorheis, has played with Mel Torme, Helen Reddy, George Kirby. Louis Nye, Johnny Desmond and June Valli. His proudest moment was when the composer Jimmy Van Heusen, composer of “Come Fly With Me” and “The Second Time Around,” heard him play Van Heusen’s song, “Here’s That Rainy Day,” and asked Jim to show him his substitute harmonies.

The concerts are free. A love offering will be taken. Please note that each concert is to be followed by a wonderful reception with delicious refreshments by St. Mary’s Church. The church is located at 623 SE Ocean Blvd, Stuart FL. (MAP) The church phone is (772) 287-3244.
