The Nighthawks have built a reputation as a powerhouse live band, often hailed as the hardest-working band in America. They have entertained audiences worldwide with their signature blend of blues, rock, soul, R&B, rockabilly, and swing. Known for their hard-driving, soulful, and sometimes raucous performances, they earned the title of "the world’s best bar band." Their legacy was recently highlighted in the documentary Nighthawks on the Blue Highway.
Mark Wenner has led The Nighthawks since their founding in 1972. The original quartet dominated the highways and honky-tonks, paving the way for contemporaries like The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Robert Cray. They shared the stage with countless blues and rockabilly legends, opening for Muddy Waters, James Cotton, and Carl Perkins while also recording and performing alongside John Hammond and Pinetop Perkins.
“Our sound is rooted in a Chicago blues band,” Wenner explained, “but we could always throw in a country song, an old rock-and-roll tune, or even something from a contemporary songwriter or Motown.”
Opening for and playing with the Nighthawks is Ocala native Rev. Billy C. Wirtz, a comic genius, gifted pianist and American musicologist who defies easy classification. "I like to think of myself as the Victor Borge of the Blues," states Wirtz, but he goes way beyond Borge both in scope of subject matter (from politics to social commentary) and, of course, in taste. In fact, no theme is too extreme, taboo, or undignified for the Reverend, so long as it garners a good laugh.
Likely the only person on earth to be mentored by Chicago Blues legend Sunnyland Slim and also to work with Root Boy Slim, Wirtz has also worked with The Nighthawks for decades.
