The world premier screening of this film that explores the creation of this GRAMMY-nominated ensemble’s most recent album project, “Within Us" - cited as one of the top jazz albums of 2021. The group, led by USF Distinguished Professor Emeritus Chuck Owen (Featured in the February issue of Jazz & Blues Florida), is celebrating their 25th anniversary this year. The world class musicians in the Jazz Surge include many USF Jazz faculty members and prominent USF alumni who have gone on to successful careers in the music industry.
Filmed throughout the recording process as well as at the band’s electric CD release performance at New York’s Birdland Jazz Club, it illuminates the creative process & logistical challenges involved in such a complex undertaking all while observing the interactions of this close-knit “family” of musicians joyously reuniting and playing again (most for the 1st time) after 15 months of Covid. , the video is likely headed to film festivals in the near future.
