Trombonist and Composer MARSHALL GILKES Brings
Exciting New Music to USF’s Monday Night Jazz, on November 18, 2019.
The next Monday Night Jazz concert at the USF Concert Hall in
Tampa will feature MARSHALL GILKES, the New York trombonist known for
his virtuosic technique and passionate performances, on November 18,
at 7:30 p.m. Gilkes, winner of Downbeat magazine’s 2017 Critics Poll
as ‘Up and Coming Trombonist,’ will appear with the USF Jazz
Ensemble, conducted by Chuck Owen. The monthly Monday Night Jazz Series,
which began in 1996, is presented by the USF School of Music and the
Tampa Jazz Club.
Marshall Gilkes has impacted the jazz scene as a performer,
composer, and educator since arriving in New York 20 years ago. He’s
heard with the Maria Schneider Orchestra, the ensemble of Columbian
harpist Edmar Castaneda, and frequently in New York’s thriving Latin
music scene. And his two most recent CDs feature his compositions
with the singular WDR Big Band from Germany, an ensemble he was part
of for several years. USF’s Chuck Owen has also worked with that
famed jazz orchestra this year, and Gilkes’ new music for the WDR
Band will be heard at the USF concert.
Monday Night Jazz continues to bring top-flight performances
to area audiences, and enriches the USF experience with clinics and
master classes. “Our students get to interact with great jazz artists
every month, something not found at all schools,” said USF Jazz
Studies Director Jack Wilkins. Marshall Gilkes, on the faculty at the
Manhattan School of Music and at Berklee, will share his exciting new
compositions and remarkable playing, in this performance with the USF
Jazz Ensemble, on Monday, November 18.
