The Third Annual Summer Jazz Series at Faena Miami Beach, in partnership with American Airlines, Yamaha and WDNA-FM,  is thrilled to present the return of the amazing keyboard prodigy Matthew Whitaker in a very special performance at the glamorous and intimate Faena Theater on Wednesday August 21st.  Matthew gave us a great show last year, and this year he’ll be bringing his own band and playing music from his brand new album, “Now Hear This”.

Just 18 years old and blind since birth, pianist/organist Matthew Whitaker has been wowing audiences everywhere since the age of 10 when he won first place on Fox’s ‘Showtime At The Apollo”.  This triumph lead to Matthew’s opening act performance at Steve Wonder’s Hall of Fame Induction at New York’s Apollo Theater.  Since then he’s achieved international acclaim, performing across the world in impressive venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Newport Jazz Festival, the Monterrey Jazz Festival and international appearances in France, Germany, Italy, Indonesia, the UK, Australia, Switzerland, Portugal, Japan, Spain and Morocco.  He has also charmed millions through his appearances on NBC’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”, TODAY’s documentary series, “Boys Changing The World”, and Harry Connick Junior’s daytime talk show.

At the age of five Matthew began attending the Filomen M. D’Agostino Greenberg Music School in New York City, the only community music school for the blind and visually impaired in the United States.  He recently graduated from Emerson Junior/Senior High School iln Emerson, New Jersey and shall begin attending the Juilliard School of Music in September as the first blind undergraduate in their Jazz Studies Program.

Matthew will be performing selections from his newly released album, “Now Hear This” (Resilience Music Alliance), which features a stellar all-star cast featuring Grammy® Award-winning drummer Ulysses Owens Jr., Cuban bassist extraordinaire Yunior Terry, guitarist Dave Stryker and Miami’s very own Sammy Figueroa. The album was overseen by Grammy® Award-winning producer Brian Bacchus, who has worked closely with the likes of Gregory Porter, Norah Jones, Randy Weston and Sullivan Fortner, among others.

Faena’s annual Summer Jazz Series is produced and curated by three-time Grammy®  nominated record producer Rachel Faro and hosted by the legendary twice Grammy® nominated percussionist and 88.9 FM WDNA radio host Sammy Figueroa.  The series is presented in South Florida’s most beautiful venue, the Faena Theater.  This sumptuous space, which evokes the grand style of European opera houses juxtaposed with the glamor of 1950’s Miami, is marked by gold-leaf and red velvet décor and a gorgeous chandelier.  It’s a perfect setting for a glamorous and intimate evening of music by the best emerging jazz artists of our time.
