March salutes Women around the world and Human Rights and we are pleased to present The Neil Bacher Quintet. Bandleader/Guitarist Bacher will feature South Florida Jazz Hall of Fame Inductee Dolph Castellano on Piano, with Neil’s long-time collaborator Bassist Peter Bockius, newcomer Victor Sanchez on Drums, and vocalist Von Henry!
Miami bred musician, Neil Bacher began playing Jazz guitar professionally at 17. During his career he has accompanied Ira Sullivan, Dolph and Tony Castellano, Stan Getz, Elvin Jones, Bobby Mover, Alice Day, Sandy Patton and many others. He’s toured the world and spent a decade playing and teaching in Europe at which time he performed extensively with bassist Peter Bockius. Bacher returned in 2000 and is currently professor for Jazz Guitar, Jazz Guitar Ensembles, and Jazz Combos at Palm Beach State College, and performs with his own quartet.
Bassist Peter Bockius was born in 1941 in Freiburg Germany and completed his studies at their Classical Conservatory. Peter looks back at a career as a freelance musician and sideman for a long list of greats including: Archie Shepp, Kenny Wheeler, Benny Golson, Wolfgang Engstfeld, Buddy Tate, Harry Edison, Michal Urbaniak, Birelli Lagrene, Kai Winding and Neil Bacher.
Dolph Castellano was born in Brooklyn, NY and eventually made Fort Lauderdale home. Trained as a classical pianist he soon began to tune his ear to the rhythms and syncopation of the jazz sound. Playing in big bands with Charlie Spivak and Woody Herman, Dolph developed his own memorable, melodic flavor. He’s performed with Jazz stars including: Woody Herman, Jimmy Dorsey, Ira Sullivan, Pete Minger, Chubby & Duffy Jackson, played with Dizzy Gillespie on his 60th birthday, and with Lou Donaldson, Donald Byrd and many others including beloved twin brother, pianist Tony. He was pianist in residence for the "Boca" and Palm Beach Pops Symphonic Orchestras.
Von Henry is a South Florida native who was introduced to music by parents who always had Mahalia Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald on the phonograph. Always amazed when people compare her to “Sarah” or “Ella”, Von has been singing professionally for 15 years or so, performing around town at Taste of the Grove, Luna Star CafĂ©, John Martin’s Irish Pub, and recently with her Jazz Trio at the Betsy Hotel on South Beach.
Victor Luis Sanchez is Miami born and raised. He is currently pursuing his degree at the FIU School of Music and is studying under Master drummer and composer Rodolfo Zuniga. He performs regularly around town.
