The Tampa Jazz Club is proud to announce concerts by two of the leading guitarists in the jazz world, on consecutive days in late January. The Tampa Jazz Guitar Summit will first feature the DAVE STRYKER QUINTET, in the Mainstage Theatre at HCC/Ybor City, on Sunday, January 28, at 3:00, part of the HCC Visual & Performing Arts Series. And the following evening at the USF Concert Hall, PETER BERNSTEIN will perform with the USF FACULTY JAZZ ENSEMBLE at 7:30 p.m., part of the Monday Night Jazz Series presented in conjunction with the USF School of Music.
DAVE STRYKER returns to Tampa following his remarkable concert at HCC/Ybor in March, 2015, and appearances later that year at the Clearwater Jazz Holiday. His latest recording, ‘Strykin’ Ahead,’ is his 28th as a leader, and reached the #3 spot in the Jazz Week national radio chart. Stryker played for more than a decade with saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, and has worked extensively with Jack McDuff, the late Kevin Mahogany, and with Steve Slagle in the Stryker/Slagle Band. For the HCC concert, he’ll be joined by Jack Wilkins, saxophone; Chris Rottmayer, piano; Charlie Silva, bass; and Walt Hubbard, drums.
PETER BERNSTEIN has been one of the most sought-after musicians in jazz for more than 25 years. After playing through the 90’s with saxophone legend Lou Donaldson, he has worked with bands led by Sonny Rollins, Joshua Redman, Diana Krall, and Dr. Lonnie Smith, among many others, appearing on more than 80 recordings along the way. At January’s Monday Night Jazz, Bernstein will perform with the USF Jazz Faculty, featuring fellow guitarist LaRUE NICKELSON; CHRIS ROTTMAYER, keyboards; MARK NEUENSCHWANDER, bass; and RIC CRAIG, drums.
