Tampa Jazz Club Opens Season Tonight w/ Art Blakey Tribute - Full Season Announced

Moanin’:
Six Decades of Hard Bop,
at USF’s Monday Night Jazz.

The Monday Night Jazz Series at USF opens a new season on September 25 with a tribute to Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, six decades after that group reached new heights with their soul-jazz classic, “Moanin’.” The USF FACULTY JAZZ ENSEMBLE will perform, along with two special guests for the occasion, drummer ED METZ, JR. and saxophonist MIKE TRACY. Monday Night Jazz, presented by the USF School of Music and the Tampa Jazz Club, takes place in the beautiful USF Concert Hall on the Tampa campus.

“Moanin’” became the biggest hit of Art Blakey’s career, and established the vibrant, funky style, with a propulsive beat, that became known as Hard Bop. In addition to that 1958 album, the band will play other favorites from Blakey’s Jazz Messengers from a few years later, when the band included Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, and Curtis Fuller.

Ever since 1982, when he left college for a semester to join the Count Basie Orchestra, EDDIE METZ, JR. has been known for being a complete drummer, at home in every style. Metz has been heard on more than 50 recordings in recent years, and Dick Hyman calls him ‘one of the best in the business.’

MIKE TRACY is a veritable ‘Ambassador of Jazz,’ teaching and establishing jazz programs all around the globe. A Professor at the University of Louisville, he has made seven recordings as a leader during his more than 40 years at the forefront of jazz education. (Mike Tracy is teaching the advanced saxophone students of Professor of Jazz Studies Jack Wilkins, while he is away for the Fall semester on a prestigious Fulbright award as the Research Chair at the School of Creative and Performing Arts at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada.)

The USF FACULTY JAZZ ENSEMBLE feature a stellar lineup, as always: TOM BRANTLEY, trombone; JAMES SUGGS, trumpet; CHRIS ROTTMAYER, piano; and MARK NEUENSCHWANDER, bass.
