St. Augustine Jazz Society awards $6,000 in music scholarships

The St. Augustine Jazz Society presented more than $6,000 in scholarships to deserving jazz music students at its May 29, 2016 Jazz Jam.

Scholarships were presented to Brock Sullivan, Henry Van Boskirk, Alex Miller and Matthew Falgowski.

Sullivan, of St. Augustine High School, received a scholarship for $595. Sullivan participated in the Winter Park Music Festival in Winter Park, Colorado. St. Augustine High School won a Superior rating and was awarded the Grand Champion Trophy for their performance. Sullivan will attend the Clarinet Clinic at Stetson University in DeLand.

Boskirk received a scholarship for $485. Boskirk, of Fruit Cove Middle School, was chosen Florida All-State Middle School Jazz Pianist. He will attend the University of North Florida Band Camp.

Continuing its support for jazz college students, the Jazz Society awarded $2,500 to Miller and $2,500 to Falgowski.

Miller received the Florida 2014-15 All State Guitar Ensemble Award.

In addition to receiving various music awards, Falgowski works with underprivileged music students.

The scholarships were presented by St. Augustine Jazz Society President Don Stockman and Vice-president Nancy Bain.

A 501(c)(3) organization, the St. Augustine Jazz Society has been instrumental in assisting many St. Johns County bright and talented musicians for the last 26 years.
