All seating is reserved; garage parking is free courtesy of South Florida JAZZ.
The 2015-16 Concert Schedule
Performances commence at 8:00 p.m.
November 14, 2015 – Julian Lage Trio
He was a guitar prodigy at eight, then protégé of Gary Burton at age 11. Since then Julian Lage has become the freshest, most compelling and charismatic face of jazz guitar since Pat Metheny. His debut recording Sounding Point received a Grammy nomination. In addition to leading his own band, Julian is featured in Gary Burton’s New Quartet. He also has an acclaimed duo project with Chris Eldridge. TICKETS
The Julian Lage Trio features bassist Orlando le Fleming and drummer Kenny Wolleson.
December 12, 2015 – Marcus Roberts Trio
Despite childhood onset blindness, Marcus Roberts has been a major force in jazz piano since age 21, winning the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition, the National Academy of Achievement Award, and the Helen Keller Award. Marcus came to prominence playing in ensembles led by Wynton Marsalis. Since then, his favorite aggregation is his own trio. He is acclaimed as a composer for solo piano, trio, large ensemble as well as symphony orchestra. The Marcus Roberts Trio features bassist Rodney Jordan and drummer Jason Marsalis. TICKETS
January 9, 2016 – Eric Alexander & Harold Mabern Quintet
A major saxophone voice always accessible to audiences, Eric Alexander teams with his mentor, the venerable hard bop jazz pianist Harold Mabern, on a regular basis. That band includes bassist John Webber and drummer Joe Farnsworth. For this date trumpet great Jeremy Pelt augments the band to play jazz in that swinging and melodic way, just as it was intended. In 2014, the quintet with the personnel listed above recorded a high-energy CD, Chicago Fire. That music will be reprised on this South Florida JAZZ date. TICKETS
February 13, 2016 – Antonio Adolfo - Hendrik Meurkens Brazilian Quartet
Decades of immersion in Brazilian jazz make vibes/harmonica virtuoso Hendrik Meurkens the perfect fit for the immaculate arranging and phrasing of pianist-composer Antonio Adolfo, who is no stranger to SFJ audiences. Authentic Brazilian rhythms and melodies are the hallmark of this band, which is made unique with Meurkens’ harmonica virtuosity. Samba jazz is what Meurkens has based his career on, although, quite obviously, it is not the music he was raised on in Europe. The band is exceptional for its lilting Brazilian sound and feel, which is so accessible to all audiences. TICKETS
March 12, 2016 – Joey DeFrancesco Trio
He wins every reader and critics poll for a reason – he’s the best! Joey DeFrancesco is the reigning king of the Hammond B3 organ – plus he sings and plays trumpet with his newest trio. A true prodigy, Joey grew up in Philadelphia playing the organ mentored by his father. He was a teen phenom (along with bassist Christian McBride) and was discovered by the iconic trumpeter Miles Davis who hired Joey at age 17. Soon he had a record contract and became a bandleader. He continues at the vanguard of the Hammond B3 organ to this day. TICKETS
April 9, 2016 – Lynne Arriale – Carla Cook – Grace Kelly Quintet
Celebrating Great Women in Music: “You Know How I Feel – The Music of Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln and Joni Mitchell”
Pianist Arriale, saxophone prodigy Kelly, and blues-drenched singer Cook and their quintet are terrific! This band was conceived by Lynne Arriale to celebrate the great women vocalists in music. Carla Cook has the ability to convey the vibe of the named artists. An important element of the instrumental component is rising star Grace Kelly, a young and dynamic alto saxophonist who also is a sensational vocalist, as we have recently learned. This project could be a highlight of the season. TICKETS
May 14, 2016 – Kurt Rosenwinkel Quartet
One of the most influential jazz guitarists of his generation, Rosenwinkel, currently living in Berlin, Germany, brings a unique approach to composition and interplay with magnificent sidemen: pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Allan Mednard. Rosenwinkel was trained at Berklee College of Music and immediately hired by Gary Burton (who has a penchant for discovering the most important guitarists for decades). He played in several cutting-edge bands before becoming a successful leader. TICKETS
June 11, 2016 – Steve Turre Sextet – “The Bones of Art (Blakey)”
Steve Turre continues to win polls as a trombonist and several times on the seashells, as well, in the Miscellaneous Instrument category. The late Rahsann Roland Kirk, in whose band he played dating back to 1970, influenced him both musically and spiritually. It was Kirk who suggested incorporating shells into Turre’s musical arsenal.
A three-trombone frontline is featured in this thrilling tribute to legendary hard bop drummer and bandleader Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers of which Turre was a member. The band is composed of trombonists Robin Eubanks and Frank Lacy along with a driving rhythm section with pianist Xavier Davis, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Willie Jones III. TICKETS
