four great days & nights - By AL Kanovsky

It started mid-week with Troy Roberts and Gary Keller at the VanDyke. Talk about triple X rated sax. I thought the walls along Lincoln Road would come tumbling down. What great musical ideas were generated in just a couple of hours of JAZZ. Emmet Cohen on electric organ helped drive the reed men with an amazing left-hand and a dynamic right. I forget the drummers name but cannot forget the drumming. Just great.
Flo and I followed with Thursday night at the Newport's Kitchen 305. A relaxed dinner and listening to the wonderful voice of Maria Rivas.
Friday was a late (for us) night treat. Troy Anderson with Dolph Castellano, Tito Cruz and Sam Chiboda wear tearing it up at Gamaroffs. We got there late and stayed even later. It's just a lot of fun and music.
Saturday, we spent the afternoon listening to the live stream from the Essentially Ellington competition from Lincoln Center in the Apple. Superb players in High School bands from around the country compete for the awards. Dillard H.S. and New World School of the Arts represent south FL. The competition continues on Sunday.
That night it was time for "The Blues". Fortunately, one of our favorites was at the Big Easy and easy for us to reach. Albert Castiglia is an award winning bluesman and composer. Matt Schuler(bass) and Bob Amsel(drums) filled the joint with sound most pleasurable. Albert announced that they were going "on the road" for a month. They will return home in June in time for the CD release parties for his new album entitled "Living the Dream". It's something we should all hope to be able to do. Happy Trails, Albert. See you at the PARTAAAYYY!!!!!!
