Blues Society Brings the “Challenge” to the Plaza
The 4th Annual Central Florida Blues Challenge, sponsored by the Orange Blossom Blues Society, is scheduled for Sunday, October, 17th at the historic Plaza Theatre. This “Battle of the Bands” type competition will send one local Blues act to Memphis, Tennessee to compete at the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge in February 2011.

The 4st Annual Central Florida Blues Challenge will be held on Sunday, October 17th at the historic Plaza Theatre located at 425 North Bumby Avenue, Orlando, FL 32803. The event is produced and promoted by The Orange Blossom Blues Society, OBBS, an Orlando based, non-profit organization, dedicated to preserving, promoting and presenting the Blues genre in Central Florida. The Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge, known as the IBC, is now in its 27th year and has evolved into the nation’s largest and most respected showcase for Blues musicians who feel they are ready to take their act to the international stage. The Central Florida Blues Challenge winner will earn the right to compete at the IBC along with 160 other bands from around the world for a chance to jump start their career on the international level.

The International Blues Challenge and the local Central Florida Blues Challenge, known as the CFBC, are both judged “Battle of the Bands” type competitions in which each competitor takes the stage and plays a short set of their music for a panel of judges. They are judged on Blues content, Talent, Originality and Stage presence. Blues greats that have competed in the IBC over the years include: Susan Tedeschi, Slick Ballinger, Ben Prestage, Michael Burks, Tommy Castro, Albert Cummings, Delta Moon, Larry Garner, Diunna Greenleaf, Zac Harmon, Richard Johnston, Matthew Skoller, Watermelon Slim, Albert Castiglia and Michelle Wilson.

Charlie Boyer, Publisher/Owner of Jazz & Blues Florida, will be among the judges for the competition. Boyer has previously judged at other Florida competitions and at the semi-finals of the IBC competition in Memphis.

The OBBS is currently looking for Blues bands who are interested in taking their act to the international stage to participate in this event. Submissions will be accepted starting Sunday, August 22nd, and there will be an $80.00 application fee for each application submitted.

Tickets to the local CFBC will be $10 advance, $8 for OBBS members/students/military and $12 day of show, $10 for OBBS members/students/military. The proceeds from this event will be used to defer the cost of sending the winning band to the IBC in Memphis as well as funding the operations of the OBBS for the coming year. Advanced ticket sales dates and locations will be announced soon.
