The North Central Florida Blues Society announces The 2010 Blues Challenge

Winners of the competition will represent NCFBS at the 2011 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN, to be held Feb 1-5, 2011.

The NCFBS Blues Challenge will be held
Sunday, September 19th at 7:30 PM
At the Emerald’s Lounge
2441 Nw 43rd St, Gainesville, FL 32606

There are 3 classes of competition: band, single/duo and CD.

The rules for the band and single/duo competition are:
1. Groups must be from Alachua, Marion, Levy, Putnam, Gilchrist, Columbia, Union or Clay counties. The majority (>50%) of members in the group must reside in one of these counties. NCFBS wants to highlight blues musicians from the region we serve. That is why we have this rule.
2. At least one PERFORMING member of the group must be a full (non-Student, non-Honorary) NCFBS member. Managers/agents/representatives do NOT count toward the membership requirement. NCFBS feels that if you want to represent us at IBC Memphis you should be supportive of our overall goals and objectives enough to have a minimum of one active member from the performing group.
3. The entry fee for a band is $25, single/duo $20. All fees and door receipts will be distributed to the winners to defray travel costs to Memphis using a pro-rated system based on the number of performing individuals in both categories.
4. Bands will play a 25-minute set, with 15-minute setup. Points will be deducted for going over time per the IBC official rules (see item 5).
5. A limited backline and drum set will be provided. Personal amps are not allowed. The NCFBS follows the rules for the Memphis challenge at www.blues.org. In particular, see “Staging and Equipment” in the Official Rules page. NCFBS will provide PA and microphones.
6. NCFBS requires the winner to compete in Memphis, thus the expectation is that if you compete and win, you will attend. NCFBS will only provide funding from the entry fees and door receipts, no other funding from NCFBS will be provided. Thus it is incumbent upon the winner that they are capable financially of attending the IBC in Memphis. Why do we have this requirement? Entries into the IBC in Memphis are becoming more limited due to the popularity of the event. The Blues Foundation (the sponsoring organization of the IBC) has indicated that if blues societies fail to send a representative, they are in danger of losing their opportunity to send entrants in future years. Thus if you win and do NOT attend you endanger future entries for NCFBS!!!
7. Bands considering competing should contact Rico Morales (rico_moe@comcast.net, 904-655-0628). A firm schedule will be available on September 15th.
8. There will be several judges drawn from the regional music community. They will be using the same scoring criteria that will be used in Memphis, which is available at http://www.blues.org/ibc/#ref=ibc_scoring

The rules for the CD contest are:

The CD must be self-produced between November 1, 2009 - October 31, 2010
There is a $10 entry fee for CD’s
Five copies of the CD must be provided to NCFBS no later than September 10th
.
