SJO’s monthly Sunshine Jazz Concert Series presents the rhythmic side of Jazz in May with popular Latin Jazz band ORIENTE! With their signature sound featuring spicy, syncopated rhythms drenched with melody and soul, the band will be performing classic Latin Jazz favorites, Soul Jazz with a twist! plus new music from their recent CD release “Soul En Clave”.
Led by Cuban composer/guitarist Egidio ”Eddy” Balzola, ORIENTE debuted in New Orleans at famed Snug Harbor Jazz Club where their original Cuban Jazz/Blues style impressed Snug’s experienced audiences attuned to the highest musicality. Since then they’ve kept a steady and diverse schedule of festivals, clubs and concerts, playing from the shores of Key West and the Mississippi to the mountains of Arizona, the Caribbean and Europe. Some highlights include opening for Ray Barretto, The Neville Brothers, Paquito d’ Rivera and Dave Valentin, and appearing at the St. Lucia Jazz Festival and JVC Jazz Fest. The band’s televised features include NPR & PBS International Travel show “Music Voyager” seen worldwide, and on the Food Network “Live with Chef Bobby Flay”. ORIENTE has produced five records to date including the latest “Soul En Clave” which they’ll feature cuts from on May 21st. Balzola’s long-time band members include Yoel Del Sol on percussion/vocals, with Stuart King on trumpet, Dony Felix on bass, and Rey Monroig on drums.
